PLEX on synology DS920+..startup buffering

Here is my setup for a better idea:

Synology DS920+
4x14tb drives (volume1)
1 12tb drive (volume2)
2x1TB for cache
setup the 4x14tb drives as JBOD (have media backuped elsewhere).
plex installed on volume2
(cant remember how I did the install for plex to get permissions)
Now…have 2 Roku ultras (ethernet) and 2 roku stick+
default settings on Rokus
All the movies are 1080p x264; 5.1 ACC
NOW the issue…
ALL the movies buffer at the inital loading for 30seconds (13%,33%99%) then plays; and it plays fine
but the loading of the movie for 30 seconds seem very long
I did a test on my emby (installed on same synology) on Volume2
and it loads within 7seconds
Is it the settings on the plex server or the Rokus?
This is really getting annoying…

Quick check (because it’s not enabled by default).

Settings - Server - Transcoder - SHOW ADVANCED.

Make sure the hardware acceleration boxes are checked and you SAVE the changes,
(Avoid the “Disable” checkbox)

Here are my settings:

That’s good.

Now, look at one of the videos which is buffering.

Specifically, Look at :

  1. Hover over the poster
  2. Expose the ellipsis (lower right)
  3. Click it → Get Info

In that “Get Info”, look for PGS, VOBSUB, or DVDRIP subtitles.

If those are present, and the player is asking for subtitles, it will use the CPU (which is not very fast) to burn the subtitles into each video frame. It’s painfully slow in most cases.

The hardware is converting the image but the CPU must handle the subtitles (Intel didn’t give us any HW acceleration for subtitles).

no PGS, VOBSUB, or DVDRIP subtitles.

Now turn off HDR tone mapping and retest.

There is no HDR tone mapping yet in the native package (but I do have a workaround)

ok…hdr DISABLED

@HAT_PLEX_GHOST

With HDR disabled, does a regular transcode work?

It should.

If not, I do need to see the DEBUG logs ZIP file of that playback attempt.

OK, so disabling the HDR did make load much faster and now able to get one movie toi play
thank you

That’s good. Now it’s working.

For those HEVC HDR (MAIN10) files, if you need/want the tone mapping, I do have a way for you to install docker -AND- overlay it on top of your existing server.

You can’t run both at the same time but you do share the same data.

This is the best workaround I can provide while waiting for Engineering to complete their work for native HDR tonemapping support.
