Plex on XBox One

I'd pay.

As a new user to Plex who has migrated from an XBMC + Shared MySQL library setup I would also say that I would be more inclined to pay for Plex Season pass and a dedicated Plex app for the xbox one if it were available.

In my eyes the XB1 is one of the very few (if not only) device that can integrate live tv, on demand services from the likes of Netflix and potentially local content through Plex to really provide an all in one solution that is relatively fast to navigate/browse and has the added bonus of voice commands through kinect.

From alot of the information I have been reading it seems M$ are likely to open up their app ecosystem on the XB1 to some degree later this year. I really think talks early in the XB1's life with the dev team at Plex and guys at @IDXBOX would be beneficial to to both parties (For plex larger userbase that can generate further donations and XB1 a strong tool to add to its media centric proposition).

I would definitely pay for an xbox One app just liked I’ve paid for all the others. It seems like a no brainier to put Plex on the xbox but I imagine it isn’t as easy as people are suggesting.

What would be interesting would be if the Plex devs waded in on this conversation, the fact that they aren’t saying anything at all is strange in my opinion. If there isn’t going to be an app then tell us so we can move on. If there is and it’s just taking a while the surely tell us that too, we’re patient(ish!), the only reason I can think of is that it is coming and Microsoft want to make the announcement themselves?

Anyway, food for thought.

MS wouldnt give a rats ■■■■ about the app, I am going to guess silence isnt golden and that it's just not financially viable for them or MS wont allow them to publish the app to the console (even though it was supposed to allow open apps more unlike the xbox 360)

I really want the Plex app on the Xbox One, and would also be willing to contribute.

+1 for Xbox One app here as well.  I would buy it.

Id pay the 60$ i shell out for a game any day. On top of my plex pass

I’d pay for this too

I broke down and got an Xbox One today. I guess now Plex will have to make a native Xbox One app.

To write a native Xbox One App, one must either be a part of a major studio working with a publisher or go through the ID@Xbox program.

The ID@Xbox program is focused around Games rather than Apps, and requires that Microsoft accept you to write your program. They haven't said whether they will accept an App developer to release under ID@Xbox.

One can send content to the Xbox via DLNA/UPnP, however the Xbox can't browse content from a server as it does not presently have a DLNA implementation.

One noteworthy thing for people to remember, someone can't simply develop an app for Xbox as it requires a code signing certificate to get your code running on the device. However, from looking over the documentation it would appear that should one have the necessary code signing certificates, porting a Modern UI App to Xbox One is a pretty quick process.

Kind of sad.

Microsoft is waiting for apple to release apple TV with real app store for every developer to make apps for it.

So one year later MS can release their own app store and keep on losing, and catching up. Every time same story with them.

MS already have the SDK for xbox apps. Why not make an app store? Just stupid. they would make 30% of each sold app/game

Imagine, weather, yelp or any other useful apps and/or widgets on your TV....

Order food from yelp while you are watching a game or playing a game, have free USA skype phone calls, which is included in the live subscription.

Use maps like in the ironman movie.

Microsoft need new leadership with real smart people, who cares about innovation and making money as a result of it.

We won't see PLEX on xbox one unless they open up.

I wouldn't say that. The Xbox division has been fairly successful for Microsoft, generating nearly 100 Billion Dollars per year in revenue for them. A large part of that has been through keeping their Publishers happy as they are the ones who ultimately craft the software that allows for the ecosystem to exist. It isn't immensely profitable, however a lot of money passes through the doors that supports a lot of R&D projects, including Azure services that are now looking to be Microsoft's #1 money maker.

Altering that equation is likely not something that Microsoft is going to do flippantly. Introducing a "race to the bottom" as seen elsewhere at the expense of their partners does no one any good.

Tanking Xbox would be a big PR Loss for Microsoft at this time as it is their only product that people stand in line for, and one of the few that people express a positive view of rather than the usual neutral to negative view held for their other offerings.

Example: it is really hard to get excited about a new version of Outlook.

However, at the same time as a software developer I would personally want to be allowed to write programs for the Xbox One and to release them to the market. I would rather that Microsoft just say "pay us a nominal fee ($500?)" and you can get a code signing cert and run whatever code you want on your Xbox as well as submit apps for release on our Marketplace.

That would create a higher barrier of entry for those interested solely in piracy (you can buy quite a few games for $500), and yet not too onerous on those actually interested in releasing something to the market. Doesn't solve the "race to the bottom" though.

Maybe ID@Xbox is the answer, where the program is free but you must be accepted to the program in advance based on selling them on what you want to develop and why it is a good fit.

According to this, we might very well see Plex on Xbone, perhaps even sooner than we thought?

I'm really hoping this paves the way for Plex on XB1

It's official Plex is coming to Xbox One =D Woooooooooooooo!

Last post here was in April.

Any update on the progress of this?

http://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/251646-apps/suggestions/6028546-plex

Microsoft now has a "user voice" forum for feature/capability requests for Xbox One. This is the link you can go to and vote up the importance of Plex support.

It takes time for applications to be written, especially for a new(-ish) platform like the Xbox One. Microsoft, like other vendors (-ahem- Apple) keep a tight reign on their app stores and limit what developers can and cannot discuss about the process behind or even the status of their app while it's being reviewed (If it's up to that stage).

With all that said I'm really looking forward to this being a replacement of the plex client on my Mac Mini.

We really need Plex on the Xbox One.  Since it doesn't have DLNA capability built in and it doesn't look like they're going to, it would be a real plus for it to have Plex out there.  And considering there's already a native 8.1 app out there, it should be a no brainer.  I'd be willing to contribute as well.  Please, please, please.  I have to play my Roku through my Xbox One to get this capability.

If you guys want it, and want Microsoft to hear you, go to the User Voice site and vote for it there. That (and probably not here) is where the Xbox team is paying attention.
