Plex on Xbox Series X - Few Issues (Please READ PLEX STAFF)

Long story short - I’m currently running latest plex server on W10 PC. WAS running nvidia shield pro as my main plex player. I didn’t have ANY playback/incompatibility ISSUES.

I was fortunate to get my hands on xbox series x. Picture quality just pop’s on it in comparison to the nvidia shield. After seeing it I can’t go back to the shield I just can’t knowing how much better it looks not to mention way faster and it’s a full gaming console.

I’m hoping someone from plex can give a straight answer if it’s a known issue being worked on OR a licensing problem that will most likely never get resolved.

  1. Anything that not Direct Play doesn’t work properly (Either choppy, incorrect sound format…)
  2. Strictly Dolby Vision does not work, it must also have HDR for it to default too.
  3. DTS-HD audio does not work, I either get DTS/AC3, no sound, or “Direct Stream” choppy
  4. Subtitles, don’t know if it’s Forced or embedded (whatever) but the file just will stop playing and just endlessly loads.

If I had a better idea if these issues will ever be addressed, I can eliminate the need for this shield

Thank you

I don’t think the xbox plex app supports DV. I don’t have a DV tv to compare to shield. I have not seen anyone confirm that DV does work on xbox, and what profiles are supported.

I’m pretty sure that shield is the only plex client that supports 4k bluray remux profiles. Other devices may support ‘streaming’ dv profiles.

truehd and dts does pass through, you must have pass through enabled in the xbox audio settings, and you must have a receiver/soundbar that can decode dts.

subtitle support is more limited than shield, in particular PGS subs are not supported, use SRT subs.

as always, check your plex server dashboard to see if something is being transcoded. if so, determine why or how to resolve that, if it is possible within the supported formats.

Profile 5 should be supported.

Plex for Xbox - #104 by Moussa

CCwGTV seems to have similar DV support, but obviously it has audio limitations.

New Chromecast with Google TV adds full support of HDR and Dolby Vision single track dual layer (FEL/MEL)

I’m not sure if supports is the right word. None of the popular devices seem to officially support anything beyond the streaming profiles.

Hi, running the most recent versions of Plex Server on Windows and Plex client on Xbox series X and getting Playback Error - An unexpected playback problem occurred.

Tried copying and renaming Xbox One.xml profile per another thread but that does not solve the problem. Also tried setting allow insecure connections to always.

Any help will be much appreciated! I’m able to play back fine with other clients on the same network such as on my nVidia Shield, Apple TV 4K and FireTV’s. Thank you!

dts-hd works fine on my xbox and receiver.

maybe install the dts app from xbox store and run some audio tests/demos.

I don’t think you have to pay to enable dts hd.

there is also a atmos app you can download from xbox store, which has some testing demos.

I ran into this on my XSX. Xbox itself doesn’t support DV in an MKV, it will on an MP4 or TS but not MKV. I ended up using the shield pro since I don’t think Plex can do anything if the Xbox won’t play it

ya everything i have is .mkv, the shield plays everything but picture quality is so much more superior.

I can do without Dolby Vision that fine, I have very little of that content anyway and going forward i can avoid it.

DTSHD i can could do without too but problem is the file is no longer in direct play it goes to direct stream which is really choppy - alot of dropped frames. If i disable the h.264 5.1 level to none it kinda helps but pretty unwatchable and i got over 600 files in that format.

The more i use plex on the xbox the more and more issues i see.

Is plex actively working on this app or it is what it is. Kinda what i’m trying to get answers too

Similar issue, The performance of my xbox S plex app, is extremly poor. I have in the same tv a Roku express 4k and works perfect.
Seems to be a Plex issue that has to be solved with new versions.

It’s impossible to believe that a 3x1 inches device such Roku has a better performance that the latest xbox.
