Plex on Xbox transcoding 4k video file: Video stream exceeded coded resolution of 3840x2160

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 2.132.0.70

Hi there,

I’m running Plex on Xbox Series S connected to an LG 4k TV. Usually Plex has no issues playing 4k content, but I just came across this one file where it for whatever reason transcodes from 4k down to 1080p.

It should just direct play the file but even if I tell it to transcode to 20 Mbps 4k it still transcodes to 1080p. The reason it’s giving is: “Video stream exceeded coded resolution of 3840x2160”. Which is of course nonsense as the video file is exactly that resolution and not larger.

Here’s the video streams ffprobe output:

  Stream #0:0: Video: hevc (Main 10), yuv420p10le(tv, bt2020nc/bt2020/smpte2084), 3840x2160 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 23.98 fps, 23.98 tbr, 1k tbn (default)

Here’s the player stats of the file in question:

The dashboard doesn’t show much other than Plex transcoding the file:

Here’s another movie with the same 4k resolution direct playing just fine:

Any idea why it’s doing this? Even if the Xbox wasn’t able to play the format, it could just transcode to 4k, yet it chooses 1080p for some reason.

I just found I had files with the same thing.

My aspect ratio was incorrectly listed as 1.78 (like yours is here), but it should have been 2.35.

Once I got a file with the correct aspect, everything fixed.
