Plex only finding some videos in a folder

It seems that the issues in here about this topic are all solved by “rename your files”. My videos are not TV shows and even artificially giving them S01E01 does not help plex find them when it scans the folder. Here is a screenshot of the files: https://i.imgur.com/CKZMu83.png

Plex finds only the first two videos listed in the Liverpool folder and none of the Celtics Lakers 30 for 30 folder (although it does find the folder, just no videos in there).

Any help would be great appreciated. Thank you.

Plex has no metadata sources for sport events.
Therefore you can only use a video library of the type ‘Other Videos’ for your sports videos.

Don’t try to mix them in with your movies or tv series.
Put them into a separate folder and direct the ‘Other videos’ library to this folder.

As you can see from my screenshot provided, they are in separate folders.

I am using “Other Videos” I can still name the folder “Sports” right? Or does it have to stay “Other Videos”?

Edit: I just tried naming a new video library “Other Videos” and it still won’t find those movies.

Of course.

Have you verified that these files are valid video files and are playable with a regular player? (e.g. VLC)
Try to put this library into the ‘folder view’ mode.

Yes, it shows the folders correctly. All of the videos are the same file type and codec and I have watched them without plex fine.

I put it in folder view and it shows the folders correctly but there are only the 2 out of 4 in the one folder and it shows the other folder as empty even though it has 3 videos in it.

Idea: Remove the Season/Episode code from the file names again
e.g. s01e03 <-- remove

Done… still no dice… possible to get in a real time chat to troubleshoot this (if you work for plex)?

Sorry, no one on one support.

Perform the Plex Dance with the ‘invisible’ files.

lol @ “plex dance”.

I did it and it still only shows the same two videos. All of the previously invisible videos are still invisible.

Then I guess it’s time for log file inspection.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 2 minutes
  6. update your ‘Other Videos’ library
  7. wait 3 minutes
  8. fetch log files and attach them here

Plex Media Server Logs_2018-07-04_19-45-19.zip (2.4 MB)

Here you go. Thank you.

You should’ve mentioned that you are running Plex server on a NAS device.
It is the usual error on Linux-based systems: wrong access permissions.

Jul 04, 2018 19:42:43.311 [0x745530d0] DEBUG - * Scanning directory /disks/media3/Sports/Celtics (parent: yes)
Jul 04, 2018 19:42:43.319 [0x745530d0] WARN - Error scanning directory, we'll skip and continue: boost::filesystem::directory_iterator::construct: Permission denied: "/disks/media3/Sports/Celtics"

On most Linux systems, Plex is running under the user account plex.
Which means your files and folders must grant this user at least ‘read’ permissions.
Because when you put files and folder onto your NAS, you are not authenticating as user plex but with a different user account.

I am not an expert on Linux and Netgear NAS’s at all, so I can only refer you to this post here: Plex not seeing TV Shows

I dont know what a NAS device is, but sorry I didnt mention it. Thank you for your help.

Your log files say that plex server is running on a “Netgear ReadyNAS” device.
NAS = Network Attached Storage
