Plex only finds 1000 of my movies

I’ll try to explain this as efficiently as possible so that you all can understand what’s happening. My Plex server is Version 1.41.1.9057 running on an M1 Mac Mini in a server rack, hardwired to my Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro. My storage is running on a Synolgy DS1821+ running DSM 7.2.2-72806.

Until a few days ago I had about 2400 movies in my library (and they are still there in the directory) and then yesterday I got a text that a movie that one of my users had been watching was missing. When I went to check, I discovered that I had far less movies than I expected (I didn’t know the exact count but 1000 seemed low). I hit scan library and it began deleting even more movies, eventually going down to 500 and stopping there. So I made sure that my movie folder still had all the files I expected, rebooted the Mac and made sure the NFS mount was accessible on reboot. I started scanning and it started to climb, above 1000 but when I came back to check some hours later it was back at 1000.

Today I spent some time making sure I didn’t have some strange double mounting of the NAS in Finder and eventually got all the of the movies to show up. Then after a bit I hit scan and it went back to 1000 movies.

Getting frustrated, I decided to nuke Plex (extreme, I know) and completely uninstalled Plex from the Mac, reinstalled, and added the libraries back. After scanning (turning off video thumbnails and credit detection so it would go faster for now) everything appeared to be there…and then a few hours later it dropped back to 1000 movies.

I installed WebTools-NG and ran “Find Media” on the movies library. After it hits 1000 movies, it moves no further and just continues to say “Processing item 1000 of 1000”

I’m at a bit of a loss as to what is happening. One thing I had recently tried was using AutoMounter to make sure the NFS mount is always available, so that if the internet drops, the mount will restore itself when it comes back up. But in troubleshooting this, I’ve pulled that app out and the issue remains.

I’m happy to share logs but I’m not sure which logs would be helpful.

Disable empty trash automatically after scan.

Very likely this known issue: Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing - Plex Media Server / Desktops & Laptops - Plex Forum. You’ll also find quite a few references to 1000 items.

Oh this is great, thank you, but also that is some terrible news. Going to investigate further, I was 99% sure I was using NFS but maybe I’m using SMB. That’s what I’ll look at next before rolling back to the previous version of MacOS

seems like following the instructions to switch to an NFS mount may have solved my issue, which is good because that’s what I wanted to be using anyway. I guess I’d been using SMB and wasn’t aware. Thanks for the help!
