Alright buddy. Plex is awesome software that we basically all use for free. I’m sure they’re at working hard at 100 different things. They don’t owe you anything.
First off not everyone uses it for free, and secondly no one said anything about anything being owed. It’s just this is the second such upgrade of firmware/software I’ve seen in as many weeks (totally different companies devices) that breaks MAJOR functionality of the app/device. I’m just hoping more posts=more visibility= more fixing.
My server had an update awaiting download when I got home today, applied it. Version 1.16.5.1488
Alas it didnt make a difference to this issue, so looks like its still the client that needs a fix/update.
ASAP. Please.
Day 7. Still ■■■■ audio…
DAY 7 - The housemates still canny watch Plex and @Hypoflex is not happy. He goes to the diary room to ask what gives but is met with silence from Big Plex!..
Will @glock32 finally get to finish his Godzilla marathon, Will @djmikekc every again, feel the warm embrace of his music surrounding him. Will @ogarling ever find this elusive Ninja he’s been searching for and will @derpmcgerp ever recover from the self-inflicted beating he received during his search for the truth! For all this and more, tune in tomorrow, for more riveting scenes from the Big Plex House.
10/10 @NostalgiaBytes best forum comment i’ve seen in ages
Yeah I got the same problem, drove me crazy browsing the settings until I found this post.
Hope there will be a cure soon, since yesterdays update did nothing of the sort.
And thanks to all you at Plex for making a fantastic product in the first place
Day 8 - The mood in the Big Plex House isn’t any better, the housemates are still unable to watch plex and the diary room appears all but abandoned by Big Plex as well! The housemates having heard nothing from them for 4 days straight!
It’s a sad sight to behold @glock32 has been seen sat rocking back and forwards in the corner, head in hands mumbling the words “Gojira… Gojira… Gojira”. @djmikekc hasn’t been seen for a while either, but if you listen carefully you can hear what appears to be sobbing in the distance. It is believed after several days without music to brighten his day he has spiralled into a terrible depression. It’s not any better for other house mates too, @ogarling has now started dressing all in black, whilst donning a tube sock on his head and hiding under the table. From time to time you can hear him shriek! “I never found the Ninja!! Because I am the Ninja!!” before retreating back into the shadows beneath the table. Even @derpmcgerp is in a bad place, he sits alone at a desk feverishly tapping the keys. He smacks himself on the side of the head from time to time, all whilst yelling at the screen. Something about “It must be in the settings! It has to be!!” before slumping down in his chair, sobbing in defeat.
Will the housemates ever watch Plex again? Will Big Plex ever come to the rescue. Is the end nigh? Is this what the apocalypse looks like? Is this the darkest timeline? Has @NostalgiaBytes gone insane and began writing a fictional tale as a coping mechanism for the void Plex being broken has left in his life. Are we ever going to get an update/fix to the PS4 App? For all this and more, tune in tomorrow to the Big Plex House!
@drzoidberg33 Any updates you can share on this topic? Appreciate your help.
No updates at the moment, still working with Sony to try to pin down the issue. I’ll post back when we know more.
Hi @Moussa - Thanks for the progress report.
Thank you!
Looks like the Big Plex House is getting a little crowded with more housemates arriving every day…
I miss my surround…
Not sure why some are “impressed” with their timely response.
This tells me they do f**k all with testing. Really? Not testing to ensure you didn’t screw up on of the most used codecs… on media playback software. Lol
OR they knew it was an issue and released any way and are using the “looking into it” to buy more time
Unfortunately this type of BS is common from plex… fix this issue and next time test properly.
Sorry but yes I am pissed.
Plex, cmon. This is a really dumb thing to break, and to also have not caught before pushing it out. You should push a rollback the same way you pushed the new Plex UI “try it out” button if possible.
Plex this is pathetic. FIX IMMEDIATELY!
As I recall, this was a binary update with new libraries from Sony. They can’t just roll it back, they have to issue a new patch through Sony. Although Sony has largely gotten rid of patch fees from what I understand, issuing a patch now and another patch as soon as the bug is fixed, both just after the original patch, might cause delays in getting approved or even a fee. I don’t know for sure, but I strongly suspect Sony would count a rollback to a previous version as an actual patch.
The old/new Plex UI stuff was just HTML that the client downloads when it starts, Plex can change that pretty much at will.
Woohooo! Ok, that’s the bank holiday weekend done and dusted, what a blast in the glorious sun! Now then, how about relaxing movie?
Hol’up a minute… It’s still busted!!! Ok, jokes over. This is taking the p*ss now.
Right, just to address some of the post since my last. I was initially impressed with the speed in which Plex responded to this post after @ogarling asked how to contact them. It was quick. The facts it’s now been 15 days and the apps still broken!?!? Well my good will is all but gone.
As for the “working with Sony” and the comments regarding “binary updates”. I’ve never heard anything more ridiculous. Let’s just look at the facts shall we. The Last PS4 system update that rolled out was version 6.72 on the 16th July.
Plex’s App along with EVERYONE else’s (aka Netflix and Amazon’s) all worked perfectly, passing digital surround correctly before the PS4 update on the 16th July and EVERYONE’s continued to work afterwards too. In fact neither Netflix or Amazon have updated their apps on the PS4 since the 3rd April 2019 (Netflix) and 26th of April 2019 (Amazon)
All was well in the digital streaming arena on PS4 until the 14th August when Plex updated their own app and subsequently broke it. This isn’t a Sony issue, it doesn’t require “working with Sony” because they haven’t changed anything. If they had, we’d expect to see updates to the OTHER streaming services which we haven’t.
There is no reason the app couldn’t be rolled back, but I accept the decision was made not to, fair enough. But were at the 15th day now, with a broken app.
You’ve rolled out two server updates since the 14th but not a single PS4 update and certification with Sony DOESNT take this long. Granted it used to, but they’ve been a lot more relaxed on the speed in which patching and updates can be rolled out on their platform for a long time now. This whole situation is ridiculous at this point.
You’ve noticed most Plex updates just happen without going though a download on the PS4’s download page, I’m sure. That’s just the HTML, mostly user interface stuff. The apps run on a browser with video libraries, that’s updated through updates like what just happened with Plex, it’s not part of the firmware. Mossa and other Plex devs mentioned before with other updates that they’re updating to new libraries that support, for example, the PS4 Pro, and that’s mostly independent of the firmware. I will say I honestly don’t know if apps use the built-in browser, but it appears they don’t since this was a UI performance patch.
To put it another way, firmware updates don’t grant h.265 support to streaming apps, the apps would have to update the libraries they run on (but the library would need a certain firmware or newer, yay). It’s different from most computers that share libraries, the console way requires everything to have their own copy of most of the low-level code they run on. The downside is that it wastes space and it’s rare to get new features in games and apps from OS updates alone (without a patch), but the upside is OS updates are far less likely to break anything.
What that means is library updates can break things, but it’s the game/app maker patching in the new stuff so presumably they have a chance to test it. Now if you just want to hear people rage against Plex, I have no clue how this update got past any sort of testing since it seems like something audio related breaks every time they do a library update. I would have a very hard time believing it runs differently on retail units vs. debug units.
I noticed the Plex version on my PS4 is 4.3.3 now, but still no luck with 5.1 audio.
