Plex over 4G not working unless a VPN is used

The device I am using is an android phone. But I don’t believe that matters. Plex works fine over wifi on the device and if I enable my VPN then it works over 4G. However if I turn it off then I get an error message about the connection every time I try to play something. What could my provider be blocking to cause this?

I don’t want to have to use a VPN on my phone.

Your provider may be blocking access to the plex mothership, i cant see why but its a good bet.
