This is less a technical but more a user friendliness question lets say.
I have plex pass and use plex since years. I recently bought my kids iPads (9th gen) and wanted to install plex on the tablets so that they can watch for example during a trip or so.
Unfortunately this didnt work as expected and I faced a quite annoying issue for which I kindly ask for support.
is it true that the app is rated 12+ so when I install it on my kids’ tablets it wont work unless I set it up accordingly and allow a 9 year old access to 12+ apps? This does not make sense as it ruins the whole idea behind screen time and restriction possibilities on the iPad. The app itself is not dangerous and not to use without an adult setting up a media server, logins, movies etc.
I have plex pass and when I install it on my own kids’ tablets it asks me to pay for it again? What is the whole idea of app store family thingee? Is there no way to grant my own kids with access to the media server using plex and their own account?
I searched for the above topics but didnt find anything and not even the suggestions on the right of this screen popping up brought up anything useful. Maybe someone can bring some light in the dark.
I’m not 100% sure about #1… but it’s correct the app is listed as 12+ in the app store.
I suppose that’s because you can use the app to watch online media too.
Have you considered giving your kids a “Managed User” instead of a full fledged Plex account?
You’ll have to sign them into the device but can configure it so they can switch users on a shared device or automatically sign-in with their individual devices.
With managed users you’re also fully in control of what your kids get to see (e.g. disabling access to the online media sources, applying restriction profiles…).
From what I’ve found you can share the app activation (in-app purchase) among your family. However a Plex Pass membership doesn’t automatically transfer to your entire family (except for the Plex Home approach described above).
You are absolutely right. In the meantime I found this as well and set it up in no time. Sorry for this but I hope maybe this will help others as well. Thanks Tom!
Hi Bob, thanks for the answer. I understand but the app on it’s own can’t do anything unless an adult sets it up accordingly right? So…what is the point. And on the ipad you should be able to block an app if you dont like but like this I cant even install it unless I increase the acceptance of apps by increasing the year to 12+. This obviously would be even more dangerous lets say. I guess I will have to deal with it or just use local videos.
Not true. The app can stream the online content Plex provides straight out of the box. It also collects and sends usage metrics (even for local content) and plays ads as part of the content. It also really likes to suggest you should create a login and buy a plexpass.
The point is, you, an adult, can give consent for all of the above and make a choice on what to do. Legally, a child can’t.
