If I knew then what I know now I wouldn’t have gotten too involve in PLEX, let along buying their apps. Paying for IOS and Windows were my worst business investments. The IOS app relies on IOS fully for support when IOS is completely limited. As a result you need to spend serious money to get Plex Media Server on a system that can mess with your good files so you can view them on your iPhone (REALLY?) and iPad for 15 minutes while you’re away. The Windows app never really works because they are too busy focusing on the app constantly checking for AUTHENTICITY that it always disconnect you out of your server because checking for AUTHENTICITY is a bigger priority for Plex. When you try to browse your library and too many movies for the app to scan, it rather call home for authenticity and if it not getting a response right away, it logs out out of your server. When you can’t watch movies or having any other problems with the Windows Plex App, it’s because the app wants to do other things first.
Even at $75, the Plex Lifetime pass is overpriced. You have to spend over $200 on HDHomerun after you gt a Plex Pass, you have to pay $60 a year to use their Cloud after you pay for the Plex Pass. You have to pay and pay and pay.
Because you have money, it doesn’t mean you have to live life without common sense, losing touch for what is right. Having money doesn’t mean you have to stop being smart and let people do you as they see fit.
When I was buying Plex apps from either Microsoft Store or Apple Store, if I was reading feedback about what Plex is all about, I would have backed away. It’s our duties as human to still stay human… help those who know not what they’re getting into.
I’ve never seen a company trying to pick a handful for Thanksgiving deal or Cyber Monday deal. I wonder how many people purchase their lifetime pass monthly. I’ve never seen a company so out of touch.
As anybody reading these boards knows I do not like much of the direction Plex has taken lately BUT I disagree with almost all of the points in this rant. Even with Plex’s problems and mistakes I still feel that my lifetime Plex pass was one of the best leisure time purchases I have ever made. It provides much of my home entertainment and does it very well.
Once you have a Plex Pass you do not need to pay Plex any more money and any additional spending is to other companies like the additional charge for a DVR tuner goes to whichever company you choose to get your tuner from and in no way are you forced to use the DVR functionality in Plex. It is an addition to the regular Plex services and is free to use if you have a Plex Pass.
The $60.00/year is for the Amazon storage and does not go to Plex and it is your choice if you want to use “Plex Cloud” at all. It is in no way required and is another free addition to regular Plex that is available if you have a Plex Pass. To top all that “Plex Cloud” is in VERY early beta and may not even end up a viable option. There are many problems to be overcome before it even reaches general release and even the Plex Pass holders will pay nothing extra to Plex in order to use it.
As far as how Plex handled the seasonal deal(s) that is their business. As with much of their decisions lately I believe they are trying to maximize their profits and in that I cannot blame them.
As far as the “authentication” and IOS and ianything part of the rant I cannot directly address it as I refuse to have anything from that ecosystem anywhere in my abode. But I can say that no app I use (Roku, Shield, PI, Fire, Windows or Android) give me any trouble browsing or playing and my library is quite large.
All in all this rant may have some valid points but those are so buried in the invalid points as to make the whole thing nearly meaningless.
