Plex pausing/stuttering on 4k stream

com.plexapp.system.log (39.0 KB)

Log added:started movie at 6:54pm CST - 6:57pm CST. Movie paused ~1:14 in

Environment:

  • Plex box: AMD 6300 3core/6logical processors, 16GB memory, SSD, GTX 1050ti 4GB and 1GBPS wired

  • NAS: Synology DS212j 2x ST600VN0033 6TB in raid hybrid (SHR) pool 1, 1GBPS wired

Issue:

When I play a 4K movie (direct play) on the Plex it starts to stutter a little after a minute in then plays/pauses as it progresses throughout the movie. 1080p isn’t an issue whether trans-code or direct play. I first came across this issue trying to play the content over my first gen Google Wifi hub via Nvidia Shield (5ghz) so naturally I went to play directly on my Plex box to rule out some things but was surprised to see I can’t even play it directly on my Plex box via hard-wired! I did notice while monitoring the content playing directly on my Plex box that the Plex transcoder process goes to “terminate” around 30seconds or so before it pauses, however; it quickly spawns another one. Plex box CPU doesn’t go over 50%.

I’ve tried almost all transcoder combinations that I can think of

Cheers!

don’t use chrome to play 4k.

use the windows PMP or plex player.

Thanks. This fixed the issue where it can now play on my Plex box but when I try to stream it to my NVIDIA Shield TV via Google wifi(5ghz forced) it still pauses/stutters so this implies I have a bandwidth bottle neck? I have a long cat6 Ethernet cable coming in soon so I’ll hard-wire between my Shield and router then retest. I just don’t see how it could be a router bottleneck based on the monitoring I observed when I played it on my Plex box directly. It wasn’t pulling insane Mbps numbers. I guess time will tell. Thanks for everyone’s help.

I’ll update accordingly.

wifi can work, but depends on how congested it is and signal quality.

you might want to read @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you for a lot of background info on 4k with plex.
