Plex permissions... confused

Hi guys,

I’ve setup a new DS918 and installed Plex as per the FAQ but I’m getting some problems which I’d like to resolve.

First problem: after launching Plex from the web link I get to the usual “name your server” wizard page but it won’t accept the server name, instead timing out and saying the settings could not be saved. The proposed name is “Synology” so no illegal characters.

Weirdly, if I close the browser tab and reopen the Plex web link, I get taken to the normal home page and Plex let’s me add libraries… I can even browse through all the shared folders on the server as required??

Second issue: the Plex shared folder shows up in macOS finder constantly when I’m logged in as my admin user (Daniel). I’d like to hide it and I’ve experimented with permissions and / or the “tick to hide in network places” option with intermittent success.

I believe both issues are permissions related, so my question is simple. Are these settings correct:

User: Daniel (admin)
User: plex
Shared folder: Media
Shared folder: Plex

Both Daniel and plex have full r/w access to Media but only plex has custom access to the Plex shared folder. As i’ve set Daniel to “no access” for the Plex shared folder I would expect it to not appear in the Finder but that’s not always the case. Obviously if I set him to full r/w then the shared folder would appear which I don’t want.

FAQ says to assign r/w access to admin, but I don’t use the default admin account. My user is part of the admin group and the only admin account I created when I set up the system. As such the Synology reserved admin is disabled in DSM and set to “no access” for all of the shared folders.

Thank you.

As far as I know the admin account has always been disabled, so assuming I re-enable it, do I just login as admin to install packages etc? What is the benefit?

FYI, I’ve solved the issue…

Setting “No access” for the user Daniel but group access for the group Administrators allows me to make it through the wizard without the shared folder appearing in Finder.
