Plex player on Android TV displays PGS when SRT selected

Server Version : 1.26.2.5797 linux
Player Version : 9.2.3.32818 (966a0f23) android tv (last shield pro)

Last versions as of today, but this bug has been here for years.
Used to happen on desktop apps too if I remember correctly (everything ok on Plex for Windows now)
Found one topic from 2019 for the same bug : Plex-1.3.1.916 - manually selected External SRT plus embedded PGS subtitles - MDE PDE agree on SRT, Plex displays PGS - Plex Players / Desktop Players - Plex Forum

This seems different to the bugs reported in the massive topic on SSA/ASS subtitles

What happens :

  • If I select PGS : my server is transcoding, the video is lagging
  • After adding a SRT and selecting it : the server is no longer transcoding, no more lag, but the player still displays the PGS subtitles ! (I don’t understand how, but the PGS suddenly works)

I usually use that trick to “fix” the transcoding oddity for PGS and still display them.
But this time I also want to change the language
I really don’t want to display the PGS, I want the SRT

What the player should do : when selecting the SRT, display the SRT. Seems like a simple ask to me: the player already knows how to read/display SRT
Bonus fix if possible : use that bug magic to allow PGS on android TV without transcoding?

Thanks !

Yeah, there’s issues with track selection in general on Android devices (both audio and subtitles). It was fixed and then broke again. Can you select the SRT, exit the app, then go back in and play the video? That was a workaround I used for audio tracks not switching on the fly.

As far as your PGS subtitle issue, do you have the settings set to “Automatic” for Burn Subtitles? Any other setting will cause transcoding when using PGS.

Thank you for that. I think I changed to “only image formats” hoping to avoid transcoding at some point, and made it worse without even knowing it

My Plex is in French, so I’m not sure if the translation is good and it’s the same in English, but :
Maybe they should change the “only images formats” to “all image formats”, to imply “automatic” might not transcode all image formats, instead of implying it might transcode more than image formats

It doesn’t seem to work consistently. But it gave me another idea : if I select correct subtitles on my desktop app before playing the video on my Shield, it works. That’s still very annoying, but at least I’m not stuck
Thanks again
