PLEX Player or Home Theater on QNAP HD Station?

Server Version#:4.5.4.1715
Player Version#: 1.33.0.2444

Just a pre-emptive question before my new QNAP TVS-872XT-i5 comes in in the next week…

Is PLEX going to come up with a player that will run within HD Station without needing to get a modified version of the player from the unofficial app store?

I have my current NAS plugged directly via HDMI into my Sony 4K projector…and I would like to keep this configuration. I’ve been Googling on this and have seen a variety of answers.

To be fair…I also access it via the network for the rest of the TV’s in the house…but since it got dropped off the listing in QNAP’s app center with the update to HD Station, just wondering when you will get the application to run in that environment?

Need a Beta-tester?

No HD Station apps / support. It was ‘dead product’ as of several years ago after Plex Home Theater was released to Public (all source)

The person who did that development for HD Station (not a Plex employee) has since terminated all development.

Why wouldn’t you want to tweak Linux code to allow the PLEX Player to run in that environment? It makes no sense…you’ve got a LINUX version.

There are “some” of us who run 4K video straight from the server via HDMI…actually quite a few from what I’ve seen in the different forums I’ve looked in. Why would you want to limit yourself in that way? Why would you want to let someone else who is clever horn in on your turf?

Short-sighted on PLEX’s part…

…or, make it possible, from the PLEX desktop/web interface to select the HDMI-out of the NAS to play the video instead of streaming it to the UI someone is currently using?

Not much code would need to be tweaked in the PLEX Server to initiate that kind of use…

More than 1 way to skin a cat…someone just needs to look outside the box and actually “want” to do it.

@jraymond_tx

  1. Plex gave the Plex Home Theater code to the Public free-use several years ago.
  2. PHT has been replaced by apps, tailored to each device which do far better.

You can get the code, It is public domain.

Go for it.

I don’t have the time to do anything like that myself. I am already over-budget on hours every week.

PS: I was the one who asked QNAP to remove PHT from their package list because it was unmaintainable and unsupportable

Like I said…you can very easily do it with the server version and the “client” you currently have…

Choose where you’d like it to play from the UI, either the html or the Media Player.

The server already has the hooks into the system…tweaking it to use the HDMI output can’t be a huge issue for you. It solves everything: no additional app needed.

My 2 cents…I’ve got a team of developers who have designed and coded a proprietary video system for auto manufacturers to do digital signage in the showrooms. We are using QNAP NAS’s to store and play the mpeg files.

This isn’t rocket science…no need to reinvent the wheel or tweak another UI you don’t want to support. Just allow the ability for someone to select the HDMI-output in the PLEX server settings.

Problem solved.

If the NAS has an HDMI out, then let us choose to play it there.

It opens a lot of doors for you…for pretty minimal effort.

If I must…I can (and will) use the built-in Video Station on the NAS, which DOES allow me to direct the output there. Only problem is the UI isn’t as slick as PLEX…but it’ll work in a pinch.

The choice is all yours…you’ve certainly decided to go forward with the Home Theater PC…and allowed that choice there, so why not on the NAS version of PLEX Server?

Huh, the only player in PMS is a JS based WebClient, so no, problem not solved!

You need a native player, like the PHT etc.
And as @ChuckPa already said, work to tweak that open-source part was done by 3.Party, since Plex stopped developing on that, as well as can’t tweak for every platform out there.

And Plex do NOT have a native player for Linux, that is currently supported!
Closest would be IOS App I guess, and that is neither OpenSource, nor works on a QNAP in HD Station.

Do all of you not read anything thoroughly before you respond?

#1) PLEX is working on a LINUX version of the media player. It’s been announced and is here in multiple places;

#2) As I’ve said above…TWICE! All they need to do is enable you to select HDMI in the server settings to output the video to.

The “client” (PLEX Media Player) communicates with the server settings…add a hook to enable selecting the HDMI once it is enabled in the server settings on the CLIENT side and they need NOTHING ELSE to allow this to work.

No other software would be needed…you won’t even need to log in to HD Station to run it!

FFS…read before you shoot your mouth off…

Hi @jraymond_tx

Please note that Plex Media Server which can be installed on a NAS simply serves media via HTTP/HTTPS to Plex Clients. In order to achieve what you want, you would need a Plex client installed on the QNAP NAS that supports Linux and HDMI out.

We do have plans to bring the new Plex HTPC app to Linux platforms in the future (announcement here Introducing Plex HTPC!). Once we have Linux support then we investigate support for QNAP’s HDMI out support on specific NAS models.

In the meantime, you could experiment with installing Kodi on the QNAP NAS, then install a 3rd party Plex addon for Kodi such as “PlexKodiConnect” to get the Plex integration you would like, then use the Kodi HDMI out.

That’s at least a reasonable answer, @chrisallen

Looking forward to you porting it to something we can use on a Linux NAS.

If you need someone to beta-test, just give me a shout. I’m pretty good at finding ways to break software and documenting how it was done for development.
