Plex player playing previously watched episode

I am currently on plex media server 1.25.8.5663, this happens to me watching on either app.plex.tv or the localhost address and has been happening for a long time. hoping there is a way to fix this. Sometimes, if I watch an episode and come back to the series later that day or a few days later, i can click the play button from the library card or the play next episode button and it begins a previously watched episode instead of the next unwatched episode.

  1. do not just close the web browser tab/window to stop playback
  2. minimizing the player means the playback is still running
  3. always stop playback using square button ■ at the bottom
  4. Don’t open several web player windows or tabs. Always check if there is already a tab or window open, particularly if you don’t heed points 2) and 3)

If you also have other Plex client types (e.g. on a Roku), make sure to NOT leave an episode in perpetual Pause mode on there. Because if this device is woken up from standby after a while, it may send its own playback progression to the server. Which may override the playback progression from other clients which have been used in the mean time.

I normally leave the tab open, i only use one tab for plex and its the only device I use unless i am away and using the mobile app downloads to watch. i always use the stop button or next video button when i am done watching an episode.

See if there is a network connection issue. For instance the client could have cached the second half of the episode, so that no major network traffic is occuring anymore.
If now the wireless network adapter is going to power saving mode, the client might lose connection to the server and won’t report its playback progress as expected.

I recommend you to disable the power saving mode of the network adapter on both the server and the client machine.

If your server has several network adapters (e.g. wired and wireless) disable the wireless and use only the wired one. This prevents Windows from switching automatically between the two – thus giving your server a possibly different IP during playback.

its not a network issue, the episodes are properly flagged as watched.
