Plex Player - "Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video."

So, is there seriously no fix for this? It LITERALLY renders Plex useless. Completely useless.

I repackaged a bunch of my mp4’s (mine are h265) as mkvs and the problem went away. There is another thread where support said the way some mp4s are muxed puts the audio packets out of order with the video and the seeking action is screwing playback. They are looking for an optimization fix, but no eta.

What i don’t understand is why plex is the only thing having a problem with these out of order mp4s.

I’m in the process of repackaging my entire library from mp4 to mkv, but it’s going to take me days.

Hmmm…I’m pretty sure all my files already are mkv, but I’ll check and see if that can solve the issue.

I don’t mind doing something like that to fix it…as long as there is a fix.

Might not hurt to just run any mkvs that don’t work through mkvtoolkit and remux it afresh to test that too.

Same here. My FireTV is on a network cable. I’m looking at the Dashboard performance and the bandwidth goes from 55 to 90 mbs without any problems. This is an issue on the app itself at decoding time…not an actual network problem. Where do we upload the logs, by the way?

Has anyone read this for the Shield TV on the nvidia forum, go to the bottom on page2.

There’s more information about why Plex is broken in that one post by an nvidia mod than there’s been on the actual Plex forums from Plex employees in 6 months. Thank you for the link.

Having the same issue here. Almost seems like it is related to some buffer or bitrate spike/drop. If you play the same movie, happens on basically anything with a high bitrate, each time it will buffer and/or get the message at the same point in time for that movie. Each movie will buffer a different point in time. Not sure if its related to this same issue or not. I can DM log messages if you like or can start up a new thread.

Client: Android 8.0.0; SHIELD Android TV Build/OPR6.170623.010)
Shield Experience 7.2.2
Server: 1.15.0.659
Connection: 1Gbps
Iperf3: 418 Mbits/sec to source file : Checked via computer connected to same ethernet as shield.

Happy to have read that post on the nvidia forum. I have this issue on the Shield, fire tv gen 2 and fire stick 4 k… It is a little off putting that no Plex employees ever post on here to reassure us

Here’s more if you go to the middle of page 32, there’s an explanation by the moderator of why you’re getting this server to slow message.

I just started using a Shield and I can’t watch my Plex videos anywhere because of this. All my devices are Android. This is so frustrating.

Is there any workaround to this? How do you install an older version of the Plex client app?

Same Probleme here on my new Philips OLED TV 803 with Android.TV 7. Every mp4 Video (BlueRay RIP) with AAC is still not working! Over DLNA/UPNP it works perfectly and of course on over TVs like Samsung and on my Windows Phone. Server is a Synology NAS 415+

Same issue here. I get it on my shield and other Android devices including my Galaxy note 9. I can wait a few seconds and most of the time it’ll continue or I can hit back and then play again and it comes right back. Bottom line is this is very annoying. It can’t be a real band with problem because I’m using a business class cable modem, nighthawk router and my internet is 300 down 12 up consistently.

This issue is a very old and I really wish they would get it fixed.

I repackaged my entire library from MP4 to MKV and now all the problems are gone. Cell phone camera MP4s don’t have a problem, but rips did for some reason.

Convert all your stuff, it’s just the easiest solution right now.

What about those of us, like myself, that already have all (or mostly) MKV files but still have the problem?

Not sure. You could still try remuxing the file to double check.

That really isn’t an option. I have everything converted to mp4 upon download, to make sure everything is playable to all Plex clients. It turns out what’s happening now is the other way around. I can’t believe why they can’t solve this very important bug.

Why wouldn’t mkv be unplayable in all Plex clients? Plex plays mkv natively.

For all of you who are having the issue, saying you have the issue does NOT help this get resolved.

Plex is aware of the problem, but it has been challenging for the developers to reproduce so that they can fully test/vet a fix.

Here is how you can help by uploading the following zip files

  1. Post Debug PMS log after the issue has occurred. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/
  2. Post CLIENT logs to go with the server logs (if you don’t have both from same time period, don’t post them). https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/
  3. The name of the media you were watching when it crashed and the media info for the file (preferably in screenshot)
    https://support.plex.tv/articles/201998867-investigate-media-information-and-formats/
  4. A sample of the file itself: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/#toc-2

Post ALL of these in 1 post, which also describes your PMS server (platform, etc.) NW configuration (wired/wireless/etc.) and the client (device, FW, etc.).

Don’t have time to get all that info as I’m working, but after a year of testing, I can tell you where they need to start looking.

MP4 + Direct Play + Exoplayer2 + H264 level = Where problem is.

There is some kind of correlation between those things that is where the issue lies. I know if I drop my H264 level below what my media is using on the Shield, it will transcode and play all of my 10,000+ files perfectly.

If I set the H264 level at or above what my media uses, it Direct Plays and displays the ā€œserver is not fast enoughā€ message, which is wrong. Gigabit Fiber connection, gigabit home network, 20 core/40 thread dual Xeon server.

So for everyone having issues playing their media on the Shield, drop your H264 level down to 2.1 or something. Yes, it transcodes, but it’s the only way to use the native Plex app on the Shield.

Only method I’ve found to Direct Play everything using native Plex app is to sideload the 6.12 Plex app. Works flawlessly, but doesn’t have new interface or features.

Also, Kodi + Plex addon works, though I’ve been having some weird issues with Kodi 18 + addon. So had to drop back to Kodi 17.6 + addon.
