Plex Player - "Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video."

Same, I have been having this problem since I bought the shield, only solution I found was to use a file explorer app and VLC. Streams perfectly well using this. Plex won’t stream ANY 4K, any TrueHD or DTS master. I need to use VLC. Only solution I can think of is we all stop paying for Plex pass and then they may start focusing on the problems rather than implementing new features that are probably buggy too!

Hate dissing Plex, I just wish they would perfect their core product.

I would buy Plex Pass if they could have a reliable working product…

I’m getting the same error. Plex on Nvidia Shield tv. App and server have the latest updates.

Just a reminder to any of the DEVs, at least giving us the option to disable direct play would almost solve this issue on the Nvidia Shield.

I’m having the same issue in my Shield TV. Any solutions/workaround yet?

How so? I thought direct play = zero transcoding = zero server strain?

The whole issue is that Direct Play is broken. So you can either direct stream or transcode fully.

Android an Android TV don’t have the disable direct play feature, which would fallback to direct stream which does a tiny amount of encoding without quality loss.

Only option currently for Android and Android TV (like Nvidia Sheild users) is to do full transcoding.

I have gone back to Kodi on my Shield. Works super fast, never buffers. The funny part is the files are served from the same server that is my Plex Media Server lol.

Direct Play works fine for me on Android devices, including my android phone.

I put emby on my shield, emby server aside of plex server on the same server.
Many files can’t be stream correctly on shield on plex with “connection not fast enough”
I tried all of them on emby on shield. They pley directly and very well, no buffer at all, no waiting time until they start to play.
I’m not happy cause i love the Plex ecosystem and interface, but i must admit main goal of a multimedia system is to play file. It can be the nicest of the world, if it is not able to play files, it’s a ■■■■. A nice ■■■■ but a ■■■■.

Please help having the same problem for a while. Every time weather it be at 1080p to 480p stream im getting this message (The connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this movie, check your connection or try a lower quality) The server I running is a Asus laptop 2016 model it has a Intel I5 processor 12g of ram… My internet speed is 150m download and 12m upload. I mess around with the settings in the plex server but I’m still getting that message… Am I getting this message because my Asus laptop not powerful enough to stream to other devices or because of the graphic card in the laptop is weak? (P.S. I’m only getting this message on my Nvidia Shield TV and my Samsung Note 8 but it stream fine on my Roku Stick) What A’m I doing wrong?

I got this today on a 640x480 file with a bitrate of only 1mbit. So silly.

Since I upgraded to Shield Experience 7.2, it is impossible to play videos for more than two continuous minutes. It only happens when I’m connected via Wi-Fi. Everything is fluid through Ethernet.
I’ve noticed that by unplugging the plug (it’s not worth just restarting it), the problem disappears, but since you leave Plex and re-enter the same thing happens.
Device: nVidia Shield 2017

I’m experiencing the same issue. My Shield TV is not in a location where I can connect it to ethernet. The app on my Sony TV (also Android) works fine and is the same version as the Shield. It seems it is more likely an issue that Nvidia needs to resolve.

Yep, since 7.2 update I’m experiencing the same issue with direct play. Had to set my max playback to 4mbps to force transcodes and then still have to wrestle with SD content well below that threshold. Was hoping the 7.2.1 patch that just hit tonight would help but still same…

Same here, Shield experience 7.2 introduced this issue… 7.2.1 didnt fix it.
I wish i never upgraded cause 7.1 worked flawlessly (for me.)
Opened a support case to nvidia about it, but doubt it will be fixed for xmas…

I’ve been having this issue on my AppleTV for a couple of weeks now. This happens whether I’m trying to play back HD or SD video, either with direct play or transcoding, and at different bit rates. For some time, I had just figured it was my GF’s home internet connection (she has DSL), but I noticed a couple days ago it was doing it at my home with a 100MB cable connection as well. I asked my brother (who hosts the Plex server on a Verizon FiOS connection), to check his routers logs and QoS settings, but all seemed fine there. Today, I was especially having trouble with playback of an SD quality movie having to buffer every 1-2 minutes. I checked the speed of my home internet and noticed it was doing fine, so I tried something different: I loaded Plex on my iPhone and airplayed the same movie to my appleTV. The movie played without a single hiccup the rest of the way.

Something is definitely broken with the Plex AppleTV app at the very least, and it sounds like this problem my extend across other platforms.

Same issue here on the FireTV, I originally thought it was down to the server having to transcode some VC-1 files. It still happened randomly with other files. During play the server appears to be maxing out the 1Gb nic. I rebuilt the VM running Plex Media Server, no dice.

However files do appear to play when the client app is restarted and when that doesn’t work a firetv restart fixes the rest. Definitely appears to be a client issue.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS – is for Plex and nVidia to come together and figure this Shield Experience 7.2 upgrade out. I have a house full of people coming – and I rely HEAVILY on Plex and the Shield (in each of the guest rooms, etc.) for content.

Please… pretty please…

Same here mate. Been extremely frustrating to say the least. Still don’t know its a SE7.2 or Plex client issue.

I have been using Emby in the meantime but this also meant wasting time having to create a new library and setting it up. Works great though and has audio passthrough. I have already turned off my auto renew for Plex Pass and will move to Emby completely if they don’t sort this out soon.

How do you open a support case?
