Not sure if there is a cost associated with this but shouldn’t Plex & Plexamp be added to the Apple App Store?
One benefit I can think of is automatic updates when new releases come out.
Plexamp is in the app store.
For those of us not “in the know” about apple, but is the “app store” for macs a different store than what is used on iphones and ipads? I have plex and Plexamp on my phone, and the plex app on my ipad (didn’t bother with plexamp).
That interface looks like a Mac computer UI. Maybe the Mac app store does not include iphone/ipad apps (for obvious reasons, such as no touch screen on most computers and varying resolutions).
App Store for macOS works on the same principal as App Store for iOS devices.
Plex release a Plex, Plex Server and Plexamp app for macOS but they have to be found/installed/downloaded manually hence my suggestion to add these apps to the App Store for macOS.
Not a big task to get them approved by Apple since they already do it with iOS App Store but perhaps there is another reason they haven’t done that i.e. cost
Well, the mobile versions of the app are feature-locked unless you either pay a $5 in-app purchase to buy, or have a plex-pass subscription on the account you log in as. It’s possible that having the app in a store costs the developer per download, so they must charge a fee to recoup the cost (and to serve as a income stream or incentive to buy a pass). They do not have similar play-restrictions on non-mobile stores, so cannot charge the fee. Also, side-loading of apps on MacOS and Windows is possible.
I guess my point is that they either want to get money from mobile users but not from desktop users, or there is a cost with the iOS app store and need to recover money from THAT.
shrug I’m not arguing against putting this in the MacOS store. Just saying why they might have a reason not to.
My understanding is Plexamp is only available to Plex Pass account holders - which is determined at login.
Plex is also free with Plex Pass features only activated when Plex Pass user logs in.
Apple only charge an annual developer fee (US$99) so I don’t think thats the issue.
Would be nice to hear from Plex devs if there are plans to add the apps to the macOS App Store.
