Surely there must be a direct link to download, but have Plex on the Mac App Store will make bigger the Plex user community because many people could download it through the good comments and good ratings.
Both the media center and server violate several of the App Store rules/requirements - there’s no way we could comply with the current guidelines without dropping features.
Could not agree more when ever I see people asking developers to put there stuff in there I wander what on earth is so special about that place (apart from the fact that it is anti choice with only what Apple allows being on offer in there)that people can't simply download from the devs websites as things have always been done.
As a matter of fact any dev who only distributes through the app store I immediately look for alternative software to do the job I need as we need software distributed through other means to be supported as well not just the app store otherwise what is to stop Apple making the app store the only place we can download in the future if devs don't get enough support on their website distribution of their software that they also turn to only distributing through the app store.
So plex devs please don't go crippling this great software just to get it into a stupid app store as other developers have done.
If Apple ever drops the sandboxing requirement, the Mac App Store might be useful. Until then I haven’t purchased any software from the store. The features I need can’t be supported and I don’t need my computer to be an iPad. That is what iPads are for.
Even if sandboxing wasn't required, we still wouldn't be able to distribute our apps via the App Store. The media server especially runs afoul of two requirements - we include a kernel extension (to support Flash/Silverlight transcoding), and we allow downloadable plug-in code to execute (to provide channels & user-installable metadata agents). We'd have to severely cripple the software in order to release via the Mac App Store, which we're obviously not willing to do :)
