[Request] Free Plex for iOS App

There has been much discussion in a number of threads regarding having to pay for the Plex for iOS app.

This request is for Plex Inc to create a free version of the app with all of the Plex Pass features stripped out, i.e. Plex Sync, Camera Uploads, Plex Home I know it doesn't exist yet, but I'm hopeful), if it ever arrives.

Just give people a basic player, you could include iAds on the Home Screen, that way Plex would probably make more money than they do selling the app.

i'm very okay with having paid for the iOS app. And, it's often on sale--I think it was on sale about four times last year.

In any case, the only reason I'm chiming in is to say that if there was a free iOS app, I would very much not be a fan if there were ads.

I don't understand why we're expected to pay for the app, and then pay for a subscription on top of it just to sync content to our own hardware

Let's not get into Plex Pass issues, use another post for that (and there are plenty of them), this is simply to find out if people would be interested in a free app with the Plex Pass stuff stripped out.

Thank you

I might not properly understand, but what would the motivation be for Plex Pass members to use an app that is stripped of Plex Pass features?

If the intent is to have a free app for Plex Pass users (to avoid double-paying as some users are concerned with), I just don't see why they would then want a stripped-down version. That would only lead to a different type of complaint.

I think a request for a free Plex app for iOS for Plex Pass users would garner quite a few more likes, mine included. Especially because maybe this would allow us to preview earlier versions of the app...and perhaps even already have extras on the iOS app.

You misunderstand, the free app would be for those users who don't want a Plex Pass and therefore wouldn't want the Plex Pass extras, Sync, Camera Uploads, etc, they just want an iOS Plex Player.  If you want a feature rich Plex Player you pay for the full app as well as a Plex Pass to take advantage of the 'premium' features.

Oh gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

I think you would still have people griping about having to "pay twice" (once for the app (or premium features of the app in this new scenario) and a second payment for Plex Pass), but I'll leave it be. I only bring this up because that's what the majority of threads (that I've seen) regarding paying for the iOS app have been discussing. But, it doesn't sound like that's what this request is addressing.

Basically, it sounds like you want the Plex for iOS app to go the freemium model.

It's not my favorite style of business, but it has worked for quite a few companies/apps so maybe I'm in the minority.

How about just paying for the app? It's $5 at the most. Half of the time it's half that price.

PlexPass is to support devs and beta test early features. If you want a quality product, you have to pay for it.

I did, and a Lifetime Plex Pass, you're behind the times if you think what you pay supports 'devs', indirectly it does, but Plex Inc is now a commercial business, not as someone commented elsewhere - 'a bunch of dudes in a basement'. They recently sought, and found a $10 million dollar investment.

I think you missed the point here.

I knew I had heard that somewhere in the forums.  Could you point to any public info on this?

I would expect big things of Plex if this is true.

Here you go https://gigaom.com/2015/01/07/after-raising-10-million-plex-gets-ready-to-take-on-itunes/

I found this interesting:

"Olechowski told me that the company already gets about 80 percent of its revenue from Plex Pass subscribers."

Word has it that the other 20% is likely App sales.

Why don’t pay for something you use often? I don’t get it. If I use something often and it’s useful I support the developer(s). These 3 or 5 bucks won’t kill you - just drink one coffee less from Starbucks
