Hello there: somewhat new to Plex, accessing via my Roku player that is plugged into the back of my Atmos AVR…the few movies that I have viewed are all recent movies, newer than 2018.
Why is it that the audio to the 3 of these movies was PCM stereo & not multichannel Dolby AC3?
Any other service on my Roku (including Netflix) player supplies multichannel audio & where available it will be Atmos…
there’s nothing in the Web Browser Settings regarding audio that includes any mention of multichannel audio & there’s nothing on my TV screen from the program via Roku that covers anything to do with audio.
This article is specifically about the Plex for Desktop apps.
You need to investigate whether your Roku is able to decode multi-channel audio or not. (It probably isn’t.)
If you find a compatibility list, compare the supported audio formats by Roku with those in your actual files. You can use the Plex media info for instance, or a standalone app (this one is quite useful to have, anyway: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo )
Also, in order to deliver encoded surround sound to your AVR, there might be a requirement to first enable “passthrough” of surround sound formats. Some Plex clients have such settings available. Some do only show them after setting the audio output to type “HDMI”.
There might be similar settings in the Roku’s global device preferences menu. (Though I’m not sure about this, as I don’t use one myself.)
Thx for the reply…the issue isn’t with my Roku stick, Plex is the only service that isn’t providing multi channel audio (see my original post), what the Plex webpage for configuration displays I don’t have at all. There is no option displayed for ANY audio configuration. My op/sys is W10/64, that pic I posted is what I get from the Plex user account config.
I have removed the Plex app from my Roku stick, doing so makes no change to my web browser Plex server. I don’t have any audio configuration available to me at all.
The settings on the web page are relevant for playback in this particular web browser only. You need to look at the settings of the Plex app on your Roku.
That is because a web browser just doesn’t provide that much audio-related configuration when it comes to surround sound – if at all.
Things are certainly different when using the dedicated Plex for Deskop app.
But that doesn’t help with your Roku, unfortunately.
Well…this IS odd, I access my F1 account here on my web browser, when I am viewing a race the audio is AC3 5.1, the & video audio are directed to my HDMI card which goes directly to my Atmos AVR, & my 70" Flat screen, I have the Atmos audio f1 provides.
When using Chrome on Windows, you should be able to use AC3 surround sound. This is one of the rare exceptions. But no dice with TrueHD, AAC, or DTS (of any kind).
I couldn’t tell. I have never used Firefox to pass through AC3 to an AVR/soundbar.
My surround system is connected directly to my computer with a multichannel DAC.
Well, I reinstalled the Plex into my Roku stick ( hoping by some miracle this issue would magically solve itself)…same issue…the Only change now is in the settings…Video & Audio…now there displays an option for DTS-HD to be included…but still no multi-channel sound
The scroll bar in the lower screenshot seems to indicate, that there are more items in that list. Is the option to extract “DTS core” from DTS HD really the only thing in there?
Do you see relevant items in the global settings of the Roku device?
My crappy test Roku stick has Settings - Audio - Digital output format
where you can enable or disable EAC vs AC3 and enable/disable DTS.
