My plex media server quit running while I was listening to music on my plexamp app on my phone. I went to the server and it says my database is unavailable. I rebooted my windows11 PC and it still won’t start. I can see my friends server is running.
Not sure what to do?
Your server logs should have some reference of what’s going on. You can access those manually from your file system if needed.
While I was searching for my server logs, the Plex Server software was not there. I just created a new local user on my computer today. I was playing music on my phone with the Plexamp app. It was playing for an hour or two. No issues. Then suddenly it quit. Because I was logged onto my PC locally and PMS is on a Microsoft account, would this cause the server to stop? I hope this is the reason.
The server’s data directory is stored in your (Windows) user/home folder.
Therefore by running Windows under a different account, the server won’t be available (or try to create a new server instance in the other [Windows] user/home folder).
Plexamp can be configured to cached loads of media – therefore it’s plausible your queue kept going while the server wan’t running… until the queue ran out of cached content.
Thank you.
Can plex run in a local windows account? If I remove it from the current windows user.
It’s not so much that you cannot run the server using a different windows account (you can).
All the server’s data (settings, database, metadata, media assets like posters, preview-thumbnails…) are physically stored in the folders of the account you used when initially setting up your server.
If you run PMS using a different Windows account, you should stills be able to link that to your Plex account… but it’ll be a new and empty instance.
You can search the forum for guides on how to run PMS „as a service“ on this Windows machine. There’s no native support for this and from what I’ve seen, there can be a number of obstacles. But that way the server running won’t depend on the original Windows account to be signed in.
I tried and failed to move my PMS to a local account. Now I want to move it back to my regular windows11 account. For some reason this is not working either. I uninstalled and reinstalled PMS on the regular windows account. When I open Plex, I logon but it is not showing any of media. No Content Available.
What logs do you need to find out what’s going on here?
