Plex randomly goes offline - Synology NAS

Hi there!

I keep having a recurring issue that started about 2 weeks ago where my server will just go offline at random times. Sometimes it will come back on in a few minutes, other times it will be hours. It happens suddenly without warning, I can’t think of anything I’ve been doing that would cause this. Please see my issue description and logs below.

Plex will be working perfectly, then all of a sudden it will go offline. From remote Plex app (for MacOS) it says “The server is unreachable,” going to localhost:32400 also shows it cannot connect to Plex (this is through a VPN connection). However, whatever is happening is not triggering a notification from Tautulli that the server is down or that remote access has been disabled. If I turn off Plex from Synology Package Center the “server is down” email immediately shows up in my inbox. I downloaded the logs from Tautulli which are attached below, they do not appear to have any interruption even while the server is unreachable. There was no interruption of internet service at my server location, I ran several speed tests from the Synology terminal and they matched speed tests I got from another device on the local network. The first log taken at 17:57 was while the server was unreachable. A few minutes later, at 18:03 the server inexplicably came back online and the second set of logs is from that time. Please let me know if verbose logs are needed. Server went down again at 18:53 with no warning or anything…see third log file attached.

Running on Synology DS218+, DSM 6.2.4-25556

Server Version#: 1.24.0.4930-6000
Player Version#: 1.33.0.2444-a220eae4
1757 Plex Media Server.log (2.3 MB)
1603 Plex Media Server.log (2.6 MB)
1853 Plex Media Server.log (3.2 MB)

Update 1: Realizing the Tuatulli logs are not as helpful as native Plex logs. I’ll attach some as soon as the server becomes available again. Also, after doing some further digging others have said this might be a networking issue. I have my NAS set as a static IP on my router and I have a custom port forward setup. If either of these could be causing issues I can troubleshoot as needed. Also, restarting the Plex package on Synology does not always fix the issue, however restarting the entire NAS has fixed it in the past. The zip attached below is from as soon as the server came back online after doing a package restart so I’m not sure if it will have the logs needed

Update 2: Today the server has only been going down intermittently, a few minutes every couple of hours. Attaching more logs to see if they can help isolate the problem.

I’ve had the same problem. It has “run out of memory” and shuts down. None of the other packages on my Synology NAS ever shut down, and I am able to go and re-start the Plex Media Server in the Package Center. It’s just annoying, as before recent updates, it had ran for months at a time.

Sorry to hear you’re having a similar issue! What do you mean by the package shut down on its own? Is it showing up as Stopped in the Package Center? Mine (typically) stays running according to Synology, however I am unable to access it through a Plex app. The logs continue to populate in Tautulli as if it were running fine. I did install a new docker package around the time the issue started popping up that is resource intensive, however I didn’t think this would cause server access to be limited.

I just checked, and it shut down again. I checked the Installed programs in the Package Center, and the button said “Run”. I clicked it, and it started up again. I checked it with a browser on the same computer, the app on my phone and the app on my Roku and it’s running.

I have the same (very annoying issue). At times it merely says “offline” when not on the wifi network but when I’m back on the network it runs again…

experiencing the same issue - do you mean Plex is showing your server as “Unavailable” at least thats what I see. Regardless of the cpu or ram utilisation on the NAS. Leaving Plex app open “sometimes” eventually connects to PMS on the NAS.

I am not a programmer but can’t understand how PMS server can use such little amount of ram (3.37% out of 4GB) - would it be more efficient if it cached more data in RAM… idk

I’ve posted this issue in another thread here but was advised to open a new thread so I just added here to minimise duplication.

are you able to check which process is using the RAM which is causing the crash. In my case PMS is not using enough RAM imho.

Glad to hear the devs are looking into that issue.

In regards to RAM usage, I’ve monitored it and no matter what PMS is doing the utilisation on my NAS never goes above 300MB - great that there are no memory leaks but to me it seems under-utilised specially when compared to similar database heavy apps.

Just installed PlexMediaServer-1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9-x86_64_DSM7

Hopefully, this will take care of the problem.
