Plex re-recording existing episodes

Server Version#: 1.31.1.2262 (but happening for several versions at least)
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomerun Connect Quatro
Guide/Lineup name: UK Freeview OTA (OX25)
Using XMLTV?: no
Channel number/Name: 035 Pick TV

I have one missing episode for Stargate Atlantic (the last one of the entire series).

As it is showing again on TV, I decided to record so that I would get that last episode. However, it is trying to record everything again.

  • I have done the Plex dance to no avail.
  • I am using the new Plex TV scanner.
  • I am recording to the same library
  • There is no resolution improvement in the new recording
  • I have other similar recordings scheduled (for other shows with only a few episodes missing) that this is not happening to (same library).
  • When I search for the show, both the recorded and Live DVR versions are shown
  • The new recordings are formatted the same as the existing ones (show name, show year etc etc)

The existing recordings

Any ideas?

OK, I think I have figured it out.

I solved it by rematching my existing show/episodes using US (not UK) as the language:

For context, my library is set as follows:

  • Language: UK
  • Scanner: Plex TV Series
  • Agent: Plex TV Series

so I am in the weird situation of living in the UK but needing to match some shows in my library using “English - United States” (instead of “English - United Kingdom”) so that new recordings will match existing shows even though those existing shows were themselves DVR’d in the UK last year.

Is it working as expected now?

In my experience - the DVR will show the episodes will record, but they actually won’t if you have them already - and they’re all matched to the same show. It’s a Leap of Faith. You have to find out what happened afterwards to know (or guess) what’s gonna happen in the future.

My EPG is so bad they’ll call American Experience - S01E10 ----> S54E21 (or something equally incorrect), so
yea, the DVR records those. The EPG has the NOVA episodes correct, so it doesn’t record those repeats.

Worse: The DVR adds a (YEAR) field to everything - and when matching against TVDB that doesn’t work very often. The EPG will provide the metadata, but if you’re matching (or trying to match) an existing show - they’ll be two different shows to the DVR.

yes, working perfectly now.

The “new” episodes did record (giving me duplicates) and only stopped when I re-matched against US info. In some cases that means a different title (eg: NCIS) or not (eg: SG: Atlantis).

We have loads of “one-off” errors (so many, it must be a systematic error, of course):

  • Regularly, the last episode or a special will record with the date instead of season/episode so you have to go figure out what it really was (but at least it recorded).
  • Every now and then Plex’s EPG completely misses a show because of wrong episode/season (and you have already recorded that “wrong” one) so you’ve lost it until the repeats come round (if it comes round).
  • For many US shows, Plex shows the 1st two episodes as merged causing the 2nd episode to be missed and every subsequent episode to be out by 1 for the rest of that season.

Yep, I see that all the time too.
It’s tricky - when the DVR isn’t using the right names by adding that (YEAR) field to everything.

I expect it’ll need constant supervision
 you know
 from us
fiddling with it all the time
lol

correctamundo

Lucky for me - our transmitter (the one) was hit by lightning 7 years ago so it only works when they reboot it - On The Air: 35%, Maybe. When it’s working it broadcasts 2 viable channels.

It’s easier to fiddle with 2 channels that don’t half work - than
more than 2 channels that do work.

Carry on

That’s a nightmare.

One last thing:

If you’ve been trying to get that episode for as long as I tried to get ‘The Rose Tattoo (1955)’ - I suggest you move Stargate Atlantis OUT of Plex’s View - until you have it aboard.

The Rose Tattoo was 37 years in the making

You wouldn’t want to miss this opportunity

wow - that’s commitment
and patience.

Thanks for the advice. If I move it out, it will try to download every episode all again (I want the last episode of the last season only) which is over 2 months away, so I have put it in my schedule to check it the week and night before.

Yea, set your cell phone alarm to 24 hours prior.

and in the end - The Rose Tattoo is one of Lancaster’s least liked performances. A reviewer called it ‘Wreched Overacting’ and while I would agree with that description - it’s still a pleasure to see him do it.

I hadn’t heard of it and just looked it up

OK, so this is still going on and now for another series which is British (so rematching to US won’t work in this case).

Is no-one else having this problem?

@sa2000 - would appreciate your thoughts on this.

The first incidences appear to be linked to Plex only associating Plex’s UK EPG TV listings with library TV that has been fix-matched using “English United States” as the language.

I have no clue why the last one is happening as I tried the fix-match solution and it has made no difference. I am therefore recording episodes I don’t need to which is annoying.
