I thought I put this in already but don’t remember filling this out. I recently reinstalled Plex, and now for a few of my tv shows it’s recording it to a new series and duplicating the shows that it already recorded. I’ve tried matching and fixing the match, which resolves it until the next recording. The file names and folders are identical, resulting in … (copy) in the file name, since it’s already there. When I merge them I have shows with two files I’ll eventually have to clean up. It’s like the agent on one has been updated but not the other. Thoughts? All content is Plex generated, so there’s no naming or moving I’ve done.
Does anyone know how I can open a support ticket? It’s pretty bad that I’m getting duplicates in my library at an alarming rate, and there doesn’t seem to be any help here. I also have a number of channels without guide data that show up on my scan so would like to at least get that logged somewhere.
Ok, well I’ll do my last reply to this in case someone needs the details. Generally I’ll say recording TV with Plex is better than some others, but I’ll be trying some alternatives, just to see if they’re at least better in terms of community / support.
Essentially the issue I believe is that they have changed the source for matching (or Algorithm) and some of my shows started being put into a different series. I’ve tried fixing the match, unmatching but with no success. The files in the “new” series all have (copy) at the end of them, since it’s putting the file into the same exact directory / file name, so it’s not a file or folder naming problem. How could it be, it’s recorded and written by Plex.
I’ve confirmed that it’s made a new series, and checked the file names, 100% it’s making duplicates. In some cases 4x over. No idea what’s up with that, but at this point I either delete the series and hope to catch reruns or in the case of multiple duplicates, even in the new recordings, I just need to not record it.
All said and done, pretty disappointed. I think many people are just using this for content they have (either legally or illegally). Most of the reviews and such don’t talk about recording TV. That said, it’s not bad, save for this issue.
The DVR operates differently than the rest of Plex. It was designed to to Record, Watch and Delete so the metadata comes from broadcast source in through the EPG. Mixing the DVR libraries with you others is problematic because refreshing the metadata will overwrite what came through the EPG. If you move or rename a file the DVR created then it looses track and will record again if repeats are enabled.
Definitely don’t point the DVR to libraries that once used or still used the legacy scanner/agents. Event then there will EPG issues like Motorweek which started in 1981 but the station keeps putting 1992 on the recordings so if you want to save them then it’s best to move them to another library and sync it up with the regular TMDB/TVDB sources.
OK, I guess I lied, since there’s some new details here. Thanks for the reply. Honestly I didn’t know there was some database or file that was tracking recordings. My assumption was that if I scanned the TV share it would know that I have the episode based on the fact that it’s named correctly. It works that way with most of the programs but not all so these must be that case.
So, if I move machines (like I did) is there any way to populate the tv recordings so Plex doesn’t duplicate them? Sounds like maybe I need to keep the directories separate but can sync it up? Not familiar with TMDB/TMDB. Sorry, if that’s a dumb question.
