Plex Recording A Show A Second Time After Deleting

I have a recording (all new episodes) set up that records early in the day. The channel it records from also happens to air the same episode overnight. If I watch the show that records during the same day and delete it before the overnight airing happens, Plex records the show again, even though I’ve already watched it and deleted it.

As I understand it, the logic in Plex to prevent it recording the same episode more than once relies on checking if it exists in the Library so deleting the episode will cause it to record again (if both are flagged as New or you have it set to record repeats).

I’ve experienced this myself - I don’t actually delete the episodes after watching but I do sometimes move them to a different library and, if I do this and there is another airing of that episode, Plex will record it again.

This actually makes sense, as I have also had to delete an episode because the recording was of poor quality and I want Plex to re-record it. If Plex didn’t record anything that had previously been recorded (even if it wasn’t in the library) this wouldn’t be possible.

I understand what you’re saying. One solution that could meet your scenario on the poor quality would be to allow you to go back in and set a “one-time” recording if something is already in a series. That would force recording of that specific airing.

It’s a pain to have to delete the episodes twice, plus it ties up a tuner when it records a show I’ve already watched. So far, that hasn’t been a problem, but if that second airing were to move to a time where I have other things recording, it could cause problems depending on priority.

Any other DVR system I’ve used in the past in the scenario I described would record the show the first time, and not again, even if I deleted the show after watching it but before the second airing.

I feel that the default should be to record just once, but give the user the option to record it again (maybe like I mentioned above).

I guess another possibility would be if the provider didn’t flag the overnight showing as new too. But I don’t have any control over that…

I have most TV show recordings set to delete 1 day after watching. I have shows record an extra 5 minutes after recording, so I usually have to FFwrd through most of those extra 5 minutes for Plex to consider the show “watched”. This way, you have watched the show and the show is probably still there when the overnight showing comes up - Plex doesn’t record the second one and will delete the first one a bit later. You can also select more than one day before Plex deletes.
