I set up a recording of the the TV show Red Dwarf from the channel Dave. I have some episodes of this already in a TV Shows library on my server. I have a separate Recorded Shows library which I normally use for recording shows. If I use this library for this show, it records the episodes I already have (“Replace lower resolution items” is turned off).
The only way I can stop it recording these is to change the recording to add directly into the TV Shows library or add dummy files to the Recorded Shows library for the episodes I already have.
Is it to be expected that the DVR only checks the library that it is recording to or is it somehow simply not recognising that the show in the TV Shows library is the same show that it is trying to record?
No. It’s working as intended. If you’re just missing one or two episodes here or there, then watching the guide data and scheduling for ONLY those episodes would be one solution while recording to the original TV library. Right now, I have a tv show that’s incomplete in my original tv show library but has no episode or season info in the guide data. I record this show in a separate tv library used for dvr recordings that are identified by recording date. I skim and review the file to see if any issues are in the recording, then I use Sonarr to automate file name cleanup and identify the season and episode info. Then send the .ts file backup to the main tv show library. Rule of thumb is keep things separate and don’t replace anything until you know for sure the recording was properly recorded.
WhatI’ve done now is set the recording for this short to add to the TV Shows library (but in a separate folder containing recorded shows) so that it can identify that the episode is present.
I’ve got it set to not replace lower resolution items so it will only record missing episodes.
This seems to be working (at least as far as I can see from the recording schedule).
