Plex remote connection to watch movies

Server Version Newest version:
Player Version#:

My plex is on a freenas server.

So I port forwarded my plex and people can watch from everywhere in full quality at my own subdomain.
But if I go to the official plex website it says it cannot connect to my server. The remote access in settings says that it’s fully available outside my home. But it says unknown ip adress at private and public.

It’s difficult to see for certain from your screenshot, but it appears as though “Manually specify an open port” is unchecked. If so, try checking that and setting the value to whatever public/external port you configured in your port forwarding rule on your router (then apply).

If you don’t select that option Plex will attempt to automatically map a port using NAT-PMP, which will fail if you don’t have UPnP enabled on your router.

I’ve just enabled UPnP on my router and now I’m able to access from outside my home with the plex app but it’s still 360p.
Do I still have to try enabling the custom port?

Check playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing.

If the connection is listed as Indirect, then it is using Plex Relay, not direct Remote Access.

Plex Relay routes traffic through servers at Plex. It is limited to 1 Mbps (2 Mbps w/ a Plex Pass).

You only need to do one or the other. I suggested the manual port configuration since you’d already created a working port forwarding rule on your router.

If you check the dashboard and it shows indirect playback, try disabling UPnP and manually specifying your configured external port.

One problem is when I enable the custom port then it start’s loading but it keeps loading. Then I restart the server but then Remote access is disabled.
Do I just need to wait it out when it’s loading after enabling it?

I’ve never seen it take longer than 10 seconds or so to successfully connect on my server. How long have you waited? In general though, I’d recommend waiting until it returns success or failure.

It’s important that you specify the same port as you configured for the public/external port in your port forwarding rule.

Also, did you check the dashboard as suggested during playback? If so, did it show remote or indirect?

Suggest you add the server-truenas tag to the thread. This is not a plex-web issue.

Please post a screenshot of your port forwarding rule.

Does your Remote Access page still display Private Unknown IP address? If so, something is definitely wrong with your setup. Plex should display the server’s local IP address (i.e. 192.168.x.y or similar).

Pull the Plex log files (debug, not verbose) and add to the thread. See Reporting Issues with Plex Media Server for details on obtaining log files.

It seems to have fixed itself after I turned on UPnp.
Tho on plex.tv it still is Indirect.
Tho it’s not really a problem because the port forward website does work and there you can watch it in full quality
