Configuring Remote access for the first time in Plex media server

Hi guys,

I am trying to set up Plex for Remote access. The following is what i have done till now.

I have set up a static IP for My windows machine where Plex server is installed.

I have also created a port forwarding in my router for 32400

But still i am getting error.

Can somebody help me point out what am doing wrong here.

Cheers

Good start!

Change the port forwarding, so it only forwards TCP packets.
UDP is not used for remote connections.

In the Plex web app, go to Settings > Server > Remote Access
put a check mark in front of ‘Manually specify public port’ and type in the ‘external’ port number from your port forwarding rule.
Click ‘Apply/Retry’.
Ignore any error messages at this point.

After doing that, restart your Plex server and let it sit at least 5 minutes.
Then go to http://canyouseeme.org/ and put in your external port number there and click ‘Check Port’.
If the test says ‘Reachable’, you’re all set.

Get any device with a plex client, that is not using your home network and try to access your server over a ‘remote’ connection.

I have changed the port forwarding to TCP.

I have restarted the plex server. I checked on that Check box and click retry to get the same error.

also in the site its saying port not accesible.

Any idea as how to take it forward.

Cheers!!!

One more thing i noticed is that now when i click on Retry, for first few seconds its showing Green and says its connected but immediately it again changes to Red and throws the error.

  1. Do you have more than one router-type device in your network?

  2. Your ISP may use

in which case there is unfortunately almost no chance of getting remote access to work.

Like this

And within secs, its changed to this.

Is it due to my firewall or something?

Sorry, don’t get your hopes up.
It shouldn’t go green at all before it has performed the accessibility check. That is a flaw in the status display.

Is there any command or any way to check this?

On the canyouseeme website, it shows an IP address. Is this the same as what appears on your last screenshot above?

Yes the Ip address in the Canyouseeme website and Plex outside are same.

Then there must be still something wrong with the router.
If you’ve set up the portforwarding correctly, it might be either still disabled or there are more filters activated in the router. Does it have a ‘firewall’?

My router is Mi router 3c
Mi Router 3c

I highly doubt if there is any firewall installed on the router. Will my internet service provider will be able to help me out in fixing this issue?

The willingness to help with such issues varies wildly between ISPs.
It is worth a try.

If you contact them, you don’t need to tell them that you use Plex.
Just keep your Plex server running and the canyouseeme website in a second browser tab.
That way you can test if the port forwarding is working or not immediately after making configuration changes.

Sure. i really appreciate your help in this issue. i will contact my ISP and will keep you posted on it.

Thanks for your help once again
Hope you will make my Plex go online

I just spoke with my internet provider. They are saying they have blocked all the ports so port forwarding is not possible. But on request, they can open 40612 and 40613 port.

so, is it possible for Plex to use this port instead of usual 32400?

Tell your ISP, “yes, do it” .

The port number on the Plex Server machine is fixed to 32400.

You’ll still have to create a port forwarding, because simply “opening a port” will only make it possible to reach your router at these port numbers from the internet.
But after the packets reach your router, they need to be forwarded to your Plex server machine. And this is what a ‘port forwarding’ does.
Now if the router allows you to define a port forwarding, where the external/public port number is different from the internal/private port number - you’re all set.
Simply create a port forwarding from
external/public interface of the router, port 40612
to
internal/IP of your Plex server, port 32400

Put the number 40612 into the Plex input mask after ‘Manually specify public port’.

Again, verify the success with canyouseeme afterwards.

Cool will try that
and keep you posted on it once i reach home.

Finally able to see the green in the remote access

Thanks a lot @OttoKerner
that opening of the port and the port forwarding did the trick

Thanks once again.
