Remote Access over VPN?

Server Version#: Latest stable

In this thread I discussed an issue I had with what seemed to be weird IP address issues.

It turned out the extra IP addresses were related to how the VPN was started up automatically.

Anyway, it now seems that with the VPN on the server disabled the Plex remote access connection is stable.

When I enable the VPN I get

Not available outside your network Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.

However, remote access seems to be working.

What gives? Are there problems I should be aware of with using a VPN internet connection with PMS and remote access.

Remote access might be working but it’s probably an indirect “relay” connection

You get a very poor picture with and limited to 2 mbps with a Plex pass 1 mbps without

You should bypass the VPN for your Plex server. Most VPN’s have some kind of split tunneling feature so Plex continues to run behind your normal IP address while everything else remains behind it

Thanks for the explanation.

My VPN (PIA) supports split tunneling. What I can’t work out how to add Plex to the list. I assume Plex is not a single application or executable, but a service.

For me, I open the settings here. Does this look familiar?

You have to check the box that says Split Tunnel I highlighted before you try to click
+ Add Application or it remains greyed out

Just scroll down to Plex Media Server and select it from the popup menu

Did you already get that far and don’t see it there?

Hi

I don’t get that (Linux) when I hit “Add Application”. I get a file dialog instead so I have to know what I’m looking for.

I tried adding /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server - that did change the Internet IP address to non VPN one, but videos won’t play at https://plex.tv/web. So something’s not quite right.

ED: I had toyed with the idea of running PMS in a VM. Maybe that’s what I should do.

Oh yeah ok, I’m on windows so this is a totally different setup

Thanks for that. I’ve decided to plonk PMS into a VM - with everything I’ve learned about PMS it makes more sense.
