Plex restarts new Google TV Chromecast

8.15.2 is the latest version which doesn’t have the HEVC crashing problem. I’ve been using it for a while now on 4 devices without any problems.

Adding myself to the list. No sound bar. Zoomed in on next autoplay episode. I hit back, restart episode, ccwgtv crashes.

It’s probably not needed here, but the same problem and its becoming for frustrating by the day. Mine is with the chromecast plugged into a Yamaha RX-AV4 receiver.

It’s been an issue with the same symptoms mentioned in this thread - watch a higher quality video, after its over and opening the next one, super zoomed in picture, some freezing, and the chromecast crash and reboot after.

The issue for me started over a month ago. I’ve been spending weeks troubleshooting… tech calls with Yamaha, looking into buying heatsinks for my new chromecast, checking my HDMI cables. The issue has only become worse over the last month … much much worse.

This is completely unacceptable for paid customers that bought this product that has has an obvious defect, brought on via an minimal tested update and it seems Plex doesn’t give a crap about it as its only getting worse by the day. The level of service that Plex Pass customers seem to get here is that we are disturbing the tech support and developers every time we let them know they f’d up. It’s like the duty is on the paid customer to do all the work to prove the exact bug and spend hours troubleshooting blindly and creating logs.

I have this issue, but to top it off, once the Chromecast restarts and I launch Plex, it has an issue where it can’t connect to the Plex server and also keeps having general Wifi reconnection issues until I reset the device a couple of times and play around the wifi settings.

I’ve been giving this set up a chance for around 8 months now. Needless to say, I am buying an Apple TV 4K this week.

Done with Google TV + Plex, hope not to have this issue in Apple TV + Plex.

When the CC restarts, go into settings > apps > plex and force stop it. this will fix the connection issues.

At that price, the Nvidia shield is a solid choice…not sure why your decision was between the apple tv 4k and the Chromecast…they aren’t even in the same ballpark

Several reasons:
1- I was fairly disappointed to learn that Google TV will not play nice with wireless speakers (not even its nest brand)
2- Works best with apple ecosystem, I’ve been an iPhone user for a long time now
3- Apple TV 4k can integrate with apple’s own HomePod mini, which I decided to go for since they will integrate best with my phone
4- I can cluster and connect a group of HomePod minis to the Apple TV
5- Apple TV 4K (2nd gen), homepod mini, and all my wireless bulbs have thread, which makes the smart home experience more immediate and seamless
6- Search results in apple TV now include the ones inside Plex

I didn’t consider a Nvidia Shield because:

  • Im not interested in gaming
  • Not sure how Nvidia Shield plays with wireless speakers
  • Slower response to commands in smart home side of it
  • More expensive than Apple TV 4k

Also, since I’m running my plex server off of a seedbox, I do not need the extra storage.

I think you’re misunderstanding my question. My question was less about why you didn’t include the shield tv, but rather why your choices were between a power house that you’re obviously okay putting the money down on in the apple tv 4k and a budget 4k streaming device in the Chromecast. They aren’t in the same class and the Chromecast is merely supposed to be there to get more people on Google tv/Android tv while not going over a price point.

I just figured Google TV would be the best streaming device from Google, guess not :stuck_out_tongue:

Chromecast with GoogleTV and the same problem with HEVC, when playing next file in row. The video is zoomed in and chromecast restarts when trying to do something. Actually on Plex 8.22.0.2732, Samsung TV 4K, sound through optical cable into digital-to-analog audio converter.

I also have this issue and have tried HEVC files from 480p all the way up to 4K, along with audio ranging from AAC to DTS-HD. I have used the device on 3 different 4K TV’s, a Samsung, an LG, and a Sony. I have also noticed that all of my HEVC shows have a tendency to freeze the video upon starting playback until I either skip forward or backward. Audio still plays though. It does this about 50% of the time, but it does it on both my Chromecast with Google TV and my Nvidia Shield Pro (2019).

@DaveBinM Just checking in since my last bug report some weeks ago. Many posts have been made since then. Can you please confirm as of today what the next steps on this issue are?

Your posts indicate that you have raised this with the Google development team and are waiting to see what they will do? Have I interpreted you correctly and can you point to where this is recorded so the community can track progress - if anything to stop an endless continuum of posts asking “has this issue been fixed?”.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do at the moment, it has to be resolved by Google with their device and ExoPlayer. Once there is a fix, we’ll have to bump our version of ExoPlayer to get it (we regularly update anyway). We’ll be following progress closely, and will update as soon as we can

What about reverting to an older version of the ExoPlayer that might not have the problem? Like v2.10.3 maybe.

I agree 100% (assuming this is possible). It’s taken months to even get proper attention for this issue now we have to wait on Google? Does the fact that many have already abandoned this device (if not the whole platform) matter? Further delays only aggravate this issue.

Downgrading is not a feasible option. Upgrading can be extensive work, and downgrading significantly more so. There are lots of improvements and changes that have come with newer versions of ExoPlayer, and downgrading is not an option. Particularly as we have features that depend on some things in the newer versions of ExoPlayer. However, if you wish to use an older version of our app, you can sideload it.

Appreciate the explanation here (I expect I’m not the only one wondering). Just frustrated at the wasted potential of this device/service pairing.

I just got back to my own apartment after the summer and came across this issue myself. I’m glad that I’m not the only one experiencing it, but I’m at least really happy to see that you and the plex team have been following this issue for the past few months and are still consistently active on this forum. We really appreciate the help and high level of customer service

Love the Chromecast TV interface but based on everything I’m reading here it might be time to go back to boring old Roku Stick. They might be blah! but they work as intended.

You’re right. I have a Google TV Chromecast sitting here idle due to this bug (both the reboot and the zoom), while I still use my Roku Stick for Plex. I can’t recommend moving from a Roku to a Google TV at the moment, if you use any of the codecs listed in this thread.
