Chromecast 4k Google TV Android 12 update just released has broken direct play

Server Version#:1.29.1.6276
Player Version#: 9.1.0.35737

Google just pushed out android 12 for the Chromecast Google TV 4k dongle.

Multiple reports coming in from friends and from my own devices that this new update breaks direct play/play original on every file tv/movie file.

It is a black screen and nothing happens. Only way to watch now is to convert/transcode which is not ideal.

Hoping other will report this as well after the update gets pushed to all devices.

Similar report: [BUG] Updated CCwGTV cannot play media when refresh rate switching is enabled in Plex

Thanks for the report of this issue. We’re investigating. In the meantime, some Android logs would greatly help with tracking down this issue.

I have noticed that disabling refresh rate and resolution switching allows the media to at least play via direct stream.

Edit: it appears direct play isn’t entirely broken… I’m currently playing a file that plex dash shows is direct playing.

This is after disabling those two settings in the Plex app settings on my CCwGTV.

Exactlty the same thing for me, I have to disable these 2 options for direct play on latest CcwGgTV firmware (Android 12).

IMO, instead of trying fix the existing issue with Android TV 12 devices (it broke on both CCwGTV 4K and CCwGTV HD), please support the new framerate matching API (begins in Android TV 11) where there is now a OS level user control in Android TV 12.

I have attached the logs from my CCwGTV after reproducing the issue.

Same here, with resolution and/or framerate match enabled, Plex stays looping trying to playback (spinning circle) and the server control panel don’t register any playback attemp.

Tested with latest stable Android Plex app for Google TV and latest stable Windows Plex Server.

There’s also an other function that is now broken, if I select Dolby Vision as preferred mode in GoogleTV settings, it can’t playback HDR10 content, I have to manually change to HDR and then I can’t playback Dolby Vision content. It happends with every app I tried (Plex, Emby, YouTube…).

It’s Google fault, not Plex,so, bad testing phase in this firmware release…

You can choose LLDV format instead of standard DV. This way, you get DV, HDR and HLG.

Wow, it’s true. If I change to Dolby Vision Low Latency it works as it should.
So this confirms it’s a bug on Google side, if we select Standard DV it should work as Low latency DV, in other way it’s nonsense.

Thanks for the info @foxba2 :ok_hand:

I’m have this exact same issue using latest version of Synology DSM Plex server and CCwGTV with latest versions of Android 12 and Plex player app.

Spinning loading wheel whenever I try to play anything as my NAS is too underpowered to do anything but direct stream Plex.

Everything works fine when I use the Plex player on my LG WebOS TV though, so likely a CCwGTV/Plex Player issue rather than a server issue.

Spinning wheel as others have reported. This happens after some flashes on the screen to let you know it’s refresh rate is going fail and you will be just watching a black screen with an orange spinning circle. It’s very aggravating that the Plex app for chromecast is so problematic.

I was able to watch my content by disabling auto refresh rate and auto resolution. After that , it would play in a miniature box. I can go into the Play Settings (within the video that you are trying to watch) and change from Original to Letterbox to make it watchable.

This is with PMS current beta with W10 and CCwGTV now with Android 12. The picture and sound quality for the other apps really is impressive with the upgrade, unexpectedly, as it was pretty crappy before the update - that is except for the Plex app which is shitting the bed and not playing content at all without having to jump through hoops just to be able to get something to play.

The setting should almost always be Letterbox. Letterbox scales the video to fill the screen without altering the aspect ratio. The setting is persistent. You do not need to change it for every movie/show you watch.

Original displays the original resolution. If you play a 1920x1080 video on a 3840x2160 screen, you will see a 1920x1080 video in the middle of the screen with black bars on all sides.

So you are saying that once I changed it to Letterbox within a video, it will stick? I haven’t attempted to watch anything else since (after disabling auto refresh rate & resolution). I don’t see an available setting to assign the aspect ratio globally within the app.

It does on my Shield and FireStick.

I don’t have a CCwGTV, but all three devices run the Plex Android TV app.

The setting is also available in the Plex Android Mobile app.

Yeah, it is a global setting that is only available when playing a video. Not sure why it is not in app settings alongside refresh rate switching, etc.

Just adding my voice that as of yesterday, after updating the Chromecast TV, Plex won’t play anything any longer. Same issue - revolving ircon. I followed some of the advice above such as selecting letterbox (which was already selected) did not solve the issue.

We have switched back to our older Firestick for the time being, but would really like a solution!

You must disable resolution and framerate match in Plex settings.

Thank you, @yossSP. Is that temporary until Plex releases a fix, or permanent?

It’s a temporary fix, sure Plex developers are on the way to fix the issue. Other media apps do the resolution and framerate match fine with the CCwGTV in Android 12.
