Multiple crash issues with latest version. Please fix this. All of the insight provided to this forum is accurate…It is the version, not ROKU, but some crappy programmer…
We have released version 6.7.4 that should correct the issue with old servers crashing the channel. It’s still best to update or remove those servers. The channel will auto-update in 36 hours, or you can update now by checking for an update on the Roku: Settings -> System -> System Update -> Check now
Actually, you’re wrong. Plex Preview and Plex Movies & TV both do the same exact thing on my Roku: loads on the right side of the TV screen forever.
Don’t mean to be a pain but I’d love it if you guys can fix this before doing away with Plex altogether.
I’m just getting started understanding and using Plex. I have the Plex server on Shield TV Pro and a Roku Streaming Stick with the Plex app.
I have not been able to use Plex on Roku since 12/10/2020 due to “server version not high enough. 1.18.3 required. Shield tv version is 1.18.0”.
The Plex preview is the same as the Plex app on Roku. Announcement states Plex older server issue is FIXED, but still not working here.
Roku checks automatically for updates daily. Current version is 9.4.0 build 4190. Shield TV is version 9. Plex server version on Shield TV is 8.10.0.21911.
Has this issue been resolved? Any ideas on how to get the Plex app on my Roku working again? Plex works fine from tv with Shield TV on it. Plex also works from PC using web app. It also works from cell phone. It works everywhere but on the TV with Roku Streaming Stick.
Not sure where to go from here.
Thanks
I’m not sure why folks aren’t more up in arms about this. 6.7.4 is still broken. It might play for a little while, but the PLEX load time is much longer if it loads at all, and if a video track (movie, TV show) will actually play it takes ten times as longto load, but usually gets stuck at either the spinning circle or 13%. The PLEX ROKU app is broken on both my Premiere + and Ultimate Roku streaming players. I hope that you guys there in PLEX-land are still working on a fix and have ROKU players in house that you are testing with.
To continue here I have additional information which hopefully either gets the attention of development, or someone who has their ear. I thought for a while that the problem might be a recent ROKU update as users of their streaming players were in an uproar after their latest 9.4.0 release. However, I reset my ROKU players to factory, and started fresh. I updated PLEX to latest server release. I then tested 4 or 5 ROKU channels like Netflix and Amazon and YouTube and some others which stream video. They all are working as they are expected to. I also tested PLEX from my Android smartphone and from my Windows desktop. They are performing properly to my local server. It is only the ROKU players which are still not playing content. The PLEX interface loads, and the Home screen comes up, and all of the content is initially shown, but when you begin to poke around, then things go south on ROKU players. Intermittently, some videos will play I found, but then, if I go to some other content in TV Shows, or my Photo’s, or Music, PLEX is forever spinning. The content icons disappear and nothing is possible from this moment on. An exit from the app, and re-entry results in the same behavior.
Just an editorial comment. Is PLEX big enough now to offer paid support? Forums have their place, but I usually associate them with free products or small time operations when it comes to real, robust support. I bet, if you asked the community many would be willing to pay for support instead of continually being frustrated by forums where there is little to no hope that anyone with any power to affect solutions or change is even listening. We love you PLEX, but it feels like it is time to offer some robust support options for your dedicated and loyal customers.
In case this helps any other ROKU users who appear to have a broken PLEX app for ROKU I think I was able to locate a potential conflict which, once removed, enabled the PLEX app for ROKU to resume being it’s reliable self. This is as of 12/26/2020. I have the 6.7.4 release of the PLEX Roku app along with my Windows 10 based PLEX Server which is running at 1.21.1.3830…
With the latest updates to ROKU streamer itself, the PLEX app and the PLEX server coming onboard at similar times in recent days it was difficult to pin down what was wrong until I could certainly say that no other ROKU apps were being affected.
The resolution seems to have been a conflict between a PLEX Service application which was written a few years ago due to the PLEX server not supporting starting itself as a Windows service. I’m not sure how long the PLEX server has offered this feature since I was starting mine with the third party application. I did notice that the third party app from the Windows System Tray was reporting "Pending Restart’ instead of Open Plex Web as its top menu option. Once I saw the option available from a manually started PLEX server, I uninstalled the third party PLEX Service, made sure PLEX would start at Login on its own, and then I restarted Windows for the heck of it, because well, that is what you do traditionally with Windows. After that, PLEX server started at Windows Login time, and low and behold my PLEX players for ROKU started playing all video content reliably again. Movies, shows which were in progress and in the ‘On-Deck’ circle, random movies, messing around with subtitles, and going back and forth all working again. It plays music, playlists, photo’s, etc. All of the PLEX Internet content had been playing fine which indicated that the issue was more localized than it seemed.
I just told my son that life seemed a little out of balance with PLEX not functioning correctly. It’s a nice belated Christmas present.
I needed to also put this update so as not to come down so hard on the PLEX developers who I have been admittedly a little short with due to not getting any response from them (and this was prior to the Christmas holiday)… So, anyway I hope this helps other loyal PLEX app users on ROKU. Happy New Year.
My Plex app for Roku has also been broken for about a week. Some of us use the app to access a local server and have NO interest in streaming from the web. I can see my Plex Media Server which is version 1.21.1.3830 on my network and I can stream onto a laptop. The Plex Roku app sees the server but is VERY flaky when connecting - sometimes it will say Server Unavailable or something to that effect. Other times it will show my media library but when I select any item it will say that the media is not available, although I can see the media server on the network.
The only thing that I can think of is the version of Plex running on the NAS drives I have attached may be old, but when running through the media server does the Roku app access the direct Plex app on the NAS drives, or go through the server?
I just checked and both NAS drives were running 1.14.1.5488.
Also checked and found the Roku Plex app works on a Roku supported TV. The Roku Plex app does not appear to work on a Roku Premiere 3920X or a Roku Ultra.
This sounds interesting as a possible part of my problem, but your post is very vague. As early adopters of Plex we had to use some workarounds at times. Everything in my system has been updated, but it is very possible that some old service is around and still running. What was the name of the third party plex service? The only thing I can find on my system is the Plex updater service, which I believe is a current service.
I too am an early adopter and have been using PLEX for probably 9 years or more. While the PLEX as a service didn’t have a name per se, I believe this is where I got on to it, back in the day - https://forums.plex.tv/t/pms-as-a-service/53381 . I hope it helps.
Just want to report in as of me posting this I am on the most current public release of Plex and my Roku TV is completely up to date and the Plex app has still been crashing back to the dash as I open it.
I am also experiencing this. Any time I try to play any media, Plex crashes and goes back to the Roku home screen. I have updated the client and server to the latest versions. I am able to play from the web player without issues. I use plex almost every day on this tv, so this is a huge issue for me.
I hate adding myself to the list, but noticed that the app (version 6.7 build 4) often crashes, and it sometimes causes the Roku device to reboot. It only happens at the initial load of whatever I’m trying to watch. Once it starts going, it’s fine.
This happens regardless the source data - my own Plex server or Plex’s own Movies & Shows. Even when we started watching a trailer from Plex’s Movies, it got stuck at 99% and after about a minute or so, the Roku just crashed. (Usually, it’s just the app that crashes, not the Roku.)
Update: I factory reset my Roku and that seems to have fixed it, indicated there was some sort of corrupted cached data.
My Plex version version was updated to version 6.7 build 6 and having same issue.
Also, sometimes, sound is out of sync from video. After it crashes, it works fine.
Upgraded to the new Roku Ultra 2020 and am still having the same problem with version 6.7 build 9. Even crashed the Roku and rebooted it.
Any update? With the new Roku, I’ve tried both wireless and wired, but no difference.
Sorry the original post was related to old servers causing a crash. We fixed that quickly and it looks like you are running a new PMS build, so this bug is not the same.
What you are describing is not related to this, but we can definitely take a look into it. Can you please DM me immediately after the crash? Please include the approximate time/timezone of the crash as well as your devices serial number. We’ll then be able to ask Roku for crash logs specific to that device to investigate what is happening.
@ljunkie - I did send you a DM after some crashes. Hopefully you can get the info and figure it out. It’s really annoying.
