Plex Roku Preview: A Faster, Simpler Navigation Experience

Hey everyone! :waving_hand:

Today we are rolling out a preview build of the Roku app featuring new and improved navigation.

We know the previous navigation changes sparked some strong opinions, especially among our most passionate personal media users. While we won’t be returning to the old sidebar layout, we have taken that feedback to heart. This new design represents what we believe is the best of both worlds: it keeps the clarity and consistency of the top navigation while restoring the speed and flow Plex users expect. We believe this, paired with initial improvements to favoriting libraries (including confirmation), shipped in our previous preview release, represents an improved experience over previous versions.

We’d love for you to install the preview channel, use it for a few days (ideally a full week), and share your thoughts once you’ve had a chance to settle in. The first few hours might feel different, that’s normal, but we think you’ll quickly feel how much faster and smoother it is than before.

This update is still a preview, and we’re continuing to work on quality-of-life improvements that will give personal media users more customization and control. But we hope this release gives you a clear sense of where we’re heading.

Here are a few highlights you can look forward to:

:white_check_mark: Faster navigation than ever – no need to load and move through content to navigate within a library (faster and better performance than any of our previous navigations).
:white_check_mark: No sidebar or content push – menus overlay content, reducing gutters and maximizing screen space.
:white_check_mark: Improved performance – menus appear instantly without reloading content.
:white_check_mark: Unified design language – better alignment with our updated UI language through the use of panels, which will be used in many other areas of the app going forward.
:white_check_mark: Simpler foundation for the future – a simpler model to enable future customization options and library actions

We’re excited for you to try it and tell us what you think!
Your feedback will directly shape the next round of refinements before we roll this out more broadly. We would love to release this to our production channel before the end of year.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Add the channel to your Roku here. If the channel doesn’t appear after adding on Roku’s website, you can force your Roku to update via the device menu: Settings → System → System update.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Share your feedback in the Plex Experience Preview category and tag your topics with roku.

Thanks, as always, for helping make Plex better.
