Plex running in background but won't open

Server Version#: 1.23.2.4656-85f0adf5b
Player Version#: 1.31.1.2262-74fdc6b7

I recently installed Plex Media Server and Plex For Windows on my laptop - running Windows 10. It’s all up and running great. Today I installed Plex For Windows on my husband’s laptop - also running Windows 10. After the installation, Plex opened and everything worked fine. But after I closed it, it will no longer open. It shows in Task Manager under Background processes but does nothing else. It’s accessible via web browser. I’ve tried restarting the laptop but that makes no difference. Any help gratefully received. TIA :slight_smile:

Same for me. PMP was working fine, I updated to the new version, now it shows as open in the tray and task manager, but never opens. I uninstalled it and reinstalled but no change. Running Windows 10 V21H1 Build 19043.105

Hi @kiwichick, @The-Shrike, thanks for sharing your experience. Let’s see if there’s an answer in the logs.

After a restart and confirming Plex.exe isn’t running (the player app, the media server can be running), will you please:

  • start Plex
  • confirm it’s busted and stuck in the background
  • terminate Plex from task manager
  • attach Plex.log from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\Logs\Plex.log

(Hi Shrike, I found your logs over here: Plex Windows App Not Launching - #15 by redesigned)

@The-Shrike thanks for your logs. Check this out:

Jun 19, 2021 21:25:33.707 [12132] INFO - [Controllers/WebController] Expected restored appearance: w:426 h:240 x:-31992 y:-31969 windowStates:WindowNoState screen:\\.\DISPLAY1
Jun 19, 2021 21:25:33.707 [12132] INFO - [Controllers/WebController] Actual restored appearance: w:426 h:240 x:-31992 y:-31969 windowStates:WindowNoState screen:\\.\DISPLAY1

Those x and y values are putting the window out somewhere in the Twilight Zone. We’ll add a guard that prevents this from happening. In the meantime:

  • Quit Plex for Windows
  • Open %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\plex.ini in a text editor like Notepad
  • Delete the [ui] section. It’ll look like mine below[1]
  • Save changes
  • Relaunch Plex for Windows
  • We should pop up in the center of the primary display

Example to delete:

[ui]
visibility=2
windowHeight=410
windowStates=0
windowWidth=728
windowX=243
windowY=753

Awesome, thanks for looking at the logs and figuring this out. I will try it when I get home from work.

Did a sever update and once it was completed it could not reconnect. when I double click the plex media server desktop app it just gives a pop up saying error. I am connected to the internet and have no idea what is wrong and why it wont connect to the server. Please can you assist.

Please open a new thread. Screenshots of the issue and log files will be really helpful.
