Plex running very slow, but play fine off Plex

Server Version#: Latest at time of this post
Player Version#: Various, all latest SW versions.

Hi all,

Just trying to get my head around Plex as I’m not sure where my bottleneck is. Loading Plex media player or android app, initial movie/show images appear quickly but if I select any file, it seems to take a while to load the shows information.

Once loaded, trying to play the file takes a long time, then buffers often.

No transcoding, all playing “Direct play”. Files vary, but mostly 1080p, 4K Remux.

I’ve attempted to use x2 devices as a server, both don’t seem to be working well at all.

If I try to play the files directly without Plex been involved at all, then all client devices can play files VERY quickly without any buffering including 4K Atmos Remux (though on mobile use the non Atmos sound track)

I’m stumped as to why Plex seemingly becomes such a bottleneck.

Devices & ISP information:

ISP: Virgin Media Fiber 350d/40u
Router: ASUS RTAC88U
Servers tried: Nvidia Shield TV & Intel NUC8i5 BEH (8gb RAM, 250gb SSD)
Storage: 20TB WD EX2 Ultra NAS
Clients: LG C9 OLED x2, Nvidia Shield TV, Intel NUC8I5, 4K FireStick, Samsung S10+, Samsung S9+, Samsung Tab S4 & Tab S6.

All clients & NAS connected to router directly via Ethernet with CAT6, except the mobiles/tablets which are only on WiFi 5ghz.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards
