Plex server disappeared after update failed

I launched Plex from my Fire TV and an update server window appeared. I clicked the update, a few minutes went by, and then I got a message saying the update failed and the server disappeared.

I’m running my server from my iMac, and now when I try to launch the Plex Media Server nothing happens. The icon has also disappeared from the top menu bar on the desktop.

Can you manually check the server logs on your Mac (link has the full path; open Finder and use Go To > Go to Folder or ⌘+⇧+G to navigate to ~/Library/Logs/). If the server won’t even stay alive, the Plex Media Server.log file should be quite lean. If the log makes no sense to you feel free to share it here.

The log is pretty big, and unfortunately makes no sense to me. Here it is!

Plex Media Server.log (520.5 KB)

That log appears to go as far as the server being shut down to be updated.
If you restart the server… will the Plex Media Server.log be updated (e.g. timestamps newer than Oct 16, 2021 16:26)?

Have you tried manually downloading the current version?

I just tried launching the server manually, and downloading the newest version and launching that. Nothing seems to happen. The icon flashes like it’s opening, but the log didn’t update. I had the server set to launch at startup so I don’t usually manually launch it, but even when I’ve manually launched it will still show the Plex icon in the upper right corner of the desktop menu. No icon currently, I’m stumped.

Any related entries in your system log?

Where would I check for that?

  1. open /Applications/Utilities/Console
  2. start “streaming” the logs
  3. start PMS
  4. check related log entries (the quicker you are, the more closely you can pin this as there’ll be tons of unrelated events)

I tried launching the server a few times keeping an eye on the log and I saw an ERROR message appear when I did. Below is the log before and after the error:

Nothing about Plex?

Nothing that I saw. It just seems like the server’s not doing anything.

Any note to Open anyway in your system settings (System Settings > Security > General)?

I don’t even see the option for open anyway.

Can you try the following?

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Enter /Applications/Plex\ Media\ Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Plex\ Media\ Server and click Enter/⏎

This is basically the same as double-clicking the app but it might show some error potential messages in the terminal window. Are there any messages showing?

It gave me an error message. I honestly have no clue what to do. My computer is just not running Plex anymore at all. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it and it just does nothing. Doesn’t even give me an option to set up a new server, which I don’t want to do, but I would if it would fix the problem.

What error message was that?

dyld: Library not loaded: @rpath/libboost_random.dylib
Referenced from: /Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Plex Media Server
Reason: no suitable image found. Did find:
/Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/MacOS/…/Frameworks/libboost_random.dylib: open() failed with errno=13
Abort trap: 6

I’ve double-checked with some geniuses
The error code implies macOS cannot read the package (usually due to a permission issue). Can you right-click the app and click Show Package, then navigate to the folder (Contents > Frameworks) and check the file information for libboost_random.dylib (⌘+i).

I’m guessing I need to have permission to read and write that file?

Yes, otherwise the app won’t be able to access/execute that package.
