As in the title, Plex does not merge misidentified seasons together when manually requested.
I have a TV Show that the server has scanned as says there are 14 seasons (only 13 aired) the mystery 14 season is what plex calls “Season 20” and contains 1 episode… from Season 9 - specifically the Christmas Special.
My first thought was to, Using Chrome interface on a client machine, Merge Season 20 with Season 9. I selected S9, then S20, selected Merge, Confirmed I want to merge… waited… refreshed, No change.
Repeat 3 times, still no change.
Rescanned the Library, still no change
Tested Merge from PMP - N/C
Tested Merge from ServerVM’s interface - N/C
Other things I’ve tried:
Renaming the episode - Result: Episode disappears completely
Adding a date to the episode in Plex - No change after rescan
I can confirm the location of the episode is in the S9 folder and is named an S9 Christmas Special.
I’m reasonably confident that this is a bug but is there something else that I can try?
How exactly are those files named?
Plex won’t understand a name like S9 Christmas Special – it’s either a special (file name containing s00eXX where XX is the special number) or a regular episode (file name containing s09eXX where XX is the episode number within season 9).
I’m not sure “merging seasons” is supposed to be an option… might be a glitch.
Its named the same way as Plex should order it using a ‘false’ season number e.g. S09E13 (where that season ended at E12.) The ‘Christmas Special’ is appended to the last part of the Episode Title (Last Christmas - Christmas Special)
There are 2 Specials in this season 00 and 13 where 00 has been put correctly at the start but 13 is galavanting off and pretending to be S20
IMDB doesn’t count these Episodes as part of the ‘season’ but PLEX isn’t calling all the other specials as their own season or ‘Specials’ - just this ONE special is getting called Season 20.
If it is a bug, it might a nice implementation to solve weird issues like this.
IMDb won’t be much help as a reference when it comes to organizing your tv shows. The Plex TV Series agent will use information from The Movie Database and TheTVDb.
Assuming this is a Doctor Who episode, naming should be like this:

Doctor Who (2005) - s00e142 - Last Christmas.ext
Where .ext is a placeholder for the actual file extension. Instead of Specials you can also use a season folder named Season 00.
