My parents have just moved into a new place, my dad loves music and wants a way to play his songs anywhere in the house. I was looking at sonos but run into the issue of the 65k song limit.
Then I found out about plex and sonos working together and the fact that plex doing the indexing bypasses the 65k limit. So im going to install the plex server at their house and use it purely for music. They watch all the movies/TV shows though my server.
I was thinking about buying a 1 or 2 bay NAS and installing it on there, Are there any recommendations? I know NAS devices have issues transcoding movies but I assume songs would be fine. I want to do this so my parents dont need to leave their PC on all the time, So are there any recomendations of cheap ($150ish AUD) 1 or 2 bay NAS?
Keep in mind that Plex music support is trivial. Are there issues and missing features (like gap between songs).
I suggest you give a try with your laptop and if you will feel good, you can purchase a small appliance for this (NAS ore a NUC pc are fine for this purpsoe).
If they watch all the TV and Movies through your server why not just host their music on your server? I’m assuming you are using Plex Media Server if they are watching TV and Movies through your server.
I decided to pay Pass because I use Plex every day (and it changed my life). But this doesn’t mean that it’s perfect and I think that something can be better. Actually, Plex lacks about a lot of key features speaking about Music. No-gap listening (important for me) and lossless sync (less important, but asked by community) are two examples of features that should be “MUST HAVE”. There are others media server (music tailored) like ampache, madsonic, subsonic, … I just ask to the devs to evaluate the effort to give a better user experience.
For these reasons, today, I cannot suggest to use Plex to listen music even if I use plex for android everyday to listen music during my coding sessions at work.

I’m not speaking about “work” or “not work”. I just speaking about user experience that is little bit different. Like you, I use Plex for everything… I’m waiting a new feature to manage my coffee machine via “Plex Remote”

My dad has about 500gb of music and lives ~4000odd kilometres away, it’s just easier for him to have a small NAS that he can add music to when he gets it, I stead of trying to get it to me to do. I can remote into his pc etc if he has any issues also.
