Plex Server keeps crashing

This main server logs cover period Jan 16, 2024 02:22:34 to Jan 16, 2024 12:05:49 and do not go back as far as evening of the 15th Jan

I can see a shutdown of the server process at 12:04 on the 16th

Jan 16, 2024 12:04:18.819 [22729155648312] DEBUG - Shutting down with signal 15 (Terminated)

Jan 16, 2024 12:04:18.819 [22729155648312] DEBUG - Ordered to stop server.

Did you instigate this shutdown?

If not, may be it got shutdown because of memory usage reaching a preset limit for the docker container ?

We could get memory usage logged by adding LogMemoryUse to Preferences.xml - see Advanced, Hidden Server Settings | Plex Support

The crash uploader logs do show a lot of crash reports but also show a network issue where internet connection was down at Jan 15, 2024 19:09 with lots of curl error 7

But these crash reports and log snippets were saved into /tmp

Could you get me the list of dmp and dmp.log files in /tmp together with the date/time stamps ie to see when each file was created

You may be able to find all these - please also zip and send me the zip by PM

Again it was not a crash - but a forced shutdown at 20:00:31

Jan 16, 2024 20:00:31.782 [23291062360888] DEBUG - Shutting down with signal 15 (Terminated)

Jan 16, 2024 20:00:31.782 [23291062360888] DEBUG - Ordered to stop server.

Did you shut it down because you were failing to access the server?

I am also having daily crashing of Plex on my QNAP TS-453Be running version 5.1.4.2596. Plex 1.32.8.7639 is installed on the NAS.
What steps can I take to resolve the issue?

Plex locks up. Web UI won’t load. Apps won’t connect. I have to restart the docker and it comes back online, which would be the shutdown log entries.

Do I have to map /tmp outside of the docker container to get them? I see the files when I docker exec into the container and ls /tmp/

edit:
Unfortunately I lost all files in /tmp from prior crashes because I created the container last night.

I now have mapped /tmp/ to a local folder so I can capture the logs. Have not had a crash since last night anyways.

edit 2:
I did enable crash reporting last night and whitelisted the sentry.io domain in PiHole which was blocking it.

edit3:
Enabled log memory as requested

Having the same problem. Where did you find 1.32.7
? Can you share the link?

Just locked up again around 840pm. Docker restart needed. Don’t see anything in `/tmp’ but attaching logs zip again if that helps
Plex Media Server Logs_2024-01-17_20-52-09.zip (3.6 MB)

I have the previous version downloads saved.

The downgrade has worked for me so far, so I’ll be holding off installing until a newer version is released

No crashes - but some requests are taking too long resulting in the Plex client app timing out

I will be analysing the logs over the next few days to look for clues

You can force a database optimization to see if that helps

Plex Web: Settings / Manage / Troubleshooting / Optimize Database

Optimizing done manually, but it is also set in scheduled tasks.

Last night I happened to be using Plex when it locked up, I may have rushed to restart it before it really locked up and created any tmp files.

Wish I had thought to do that
 1.32.8 crashes constantly.

Same issue with my TS-431P, 1.32.8 crashes constantly. Tried uploading the zipped logs, but forum says it’s too large (9.4mb). How do I make it smaller?

If it is larger than the size allowed on the forum, it would need to be uploaded externally eg google drive, one drive, wetransfer, dropbox etc and a link provided

Cool, thanks. Here is a Google Drive link to my zipped logs.

Maybe something to do with time for me. Crashed around 8pm again tonight, which is I recall, it has crashed around that time multiple times in the last week
although that is not the only times it crashed. No files in tmp, but attaching logs zip again
Plex Media Server Logs_2024-01-19_20-14-04.zip (3.6 MB)

I have the same problem on my WD PR4100 with version 1.40.775 and 1.32.8.7639. Going back to version 1.32.7.7621 seems to fix the problem.

Hi - it need to be a public link When you share and copy link, the Manage Access button allows you to select the type of link to use.

My bad. I fixed it.

Thanks for the logs

From the logs I can see crashes at these times

Jan 17, 2024 19:32
Jan 17, 2024 22:04
Jan 18, 2024 03:52

Also some crash reports uploaded for

Jan 22, 2024 19:55
Jan 17, 2024 11:58

I have the main server logs covering the crash at Jan 18, 2024 03:52
Could you look for these files and zip and attach them please - i will compare with this crash

/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/tmp/eff3d40d-b77c-4947-f278da8a-534a0183.dmp.log
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/tmp/d6b63629-974c-4cb9-9e4b0886-77207c4e.dmp.log
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/tmp/0bc9965f-38bd-43ce-b9109e86-3803fc4b.dmp.log

Actually you could filter and copy out all files with .dmp.log and .dmp filename extension within this folder /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/tmp/ and zip the files and as these contain dmp files as well, please send the zip by Private Message

@crozilla Looking further in your logs - your media libraries setup does not look right
You have the transcoder temp directory in a path that is defined as part of a media library!

Your Transcoder Temp directory is below this path
/share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/VIDEOS/_TEMP/
But this path appears to also be part of a library !

and we are running credit detection on a transcoder temp segment file because it is being seen as part of a library - the library is Other Videos

whenever the transcoder is writing a segment , Plex Media Server thinks the library has been updated and needs to be scanned, eg

Jan 18, 2024 03:37:15.655 [1811891056] VERBOSE - Library section 4 (Other Videos) will be updated because of a change in "/share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/VIDEOS/_TEMP/Transcode/Sessions/plex-transcode-fe619b63-7345-4b82-adad-37ee6ee7f689/media-01557.ts"

The path for the library is /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/VIDEOS
and you have a /_TEMP directory below this path - did you set that up yourself ?
It needs to be moved out of there

Yeah, I did that. Just thought it needed some disk space somewhere to write temp files, so I choose my VIDEOS library as it has the most space. The PMC instructions for that field are pretty vague: (“Directory to use when transcoding for temporary files.”) Got a better suggestion? I have just left it blank now.
