Plex Server MAC Randomly Crashing

Gave this a go, will report back if it works or not - thanks!

Even after deleting the .plist the issue persists. I’ve downgraded Plex Media Server to the prior version, will monitor and report back.

It took a few weeks, but it happened last night at 22:53, same segmentation fault error. I’ve attached the Server Logs (with memory usage logging enabled), let me know if there is anything else you need!

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-07-13_10-47-11.zip (4.0 MB)
Plex Transcoder-2023-07-12-225310.ips.txt (11.9 KB)

Thank you.

Memory usage logging shows that at the time, the Plex Media Server process was using 539Mb
For the whole system 22 Gb of RAM was in use out of the 32Gb system memory

I have referred the diagnostics to our server team

Thank you

Hello,

I have never downgraded PMS on Mac before, is there any process to put in place?

Thanks for your help

Two more crashes today, one two minutes after I started back up. Logs attached.
Plex Transcoder-2023-07-14-230422.ips.txt (25.4 KB)
Plex Transcoder-2023-07-15-110800.ips.txt (25.4 KB)

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-07-15_11-09-06.zip (2.8 MB)

I also have this problem on my Mac Studio and posted a thread here: MacOS Plex Server Crashing - #10 by StratGuru
Any timeframe to when it will be fixed?

I DM’d those logs to you. Hopefully that can help track this crash down. As others have said, it’s definitely related to something that changed after Version 1.31.1.6733, since I tried running that for a while and didn’t have any crashes until I re-upgraded in order to collect the logs.

Thanks

I was hoping to see some diagnostic reports in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ that were created around the time of the crash Jul 16, 2023 00:52:10
The latest file in the zip was timestamped the day before 2023-07-15 04:06:32

I have referred the logs to the development team

Well, I have had other feedback that the issue is not present in 1.32.0.6973 but is in 1.32.1.6999 - I am happy to send you these versions and any interim versions between if you are willing to try

Hi @sa2000 , If you’re still trying to drill into this issue, I’d be happy to provide some more data if you’re interested.

I’ve been experiencing this issue for the for the last few updates. It tends to happen, at least for me towards the end of a stream. I can even reproduce it.

If I can be of help, please give me a shout, I’d be happy to provide logs, dumps and/or diagnostic reports via DM.

I’ll include a snip of data below.

Cheers,
J

Anyone try the new update? I’m skeptical

Still happening here on an M2 Mini with the latest server version: The app just quits. So far it seems to only be once an episode has ended (it’s never happened while watching) but that might only be because episode has already been cached and it’s not until the client app needs to show the home screen that the crash is detected. But my gut feeling is that something happens when the client needs to check/show what’s next up to play; at least that’s the feeling I get from seeing what happens in the client app.

Also confirm still occurring for me. No logs to say as to why, the app just stops running.

Any news from Plex with a fix for this?

Downloaded Version 1.32.0.6973 ready to swap it out when it dies. Will report back when I’ve tried this version.

Thanks for the offer. If the crashes of Plex Media Server coincide with a crash of a child process eg “Plex Transcoder” and there is a diagnostic ips file for the child process crash, then I believe we have enough examples of it which I have referred to our server team

I suspect this is the issue where the transcoder is crashing when it is coming to the end of a subtitle stream and coupled with the issue on Mac OS where a transcoder crash is causing the Plex Media Server to exit. This issue has been referred to the development team.

I have a Plex Media Server development build to offer to Mac OS users that have been getting server crashes when the transcoder crashes out - this will not stop the transcoder crash but address the server crash issue

I will make this build available to Mac users who have passed me evidence of the server crashes - anyone else affected and willing to try, do let me know

I had mine crash again last evening. What you would like me to provide you?
Plex Transcoder Statistics.log (2.6 KB)
Plex Media Server.log (1.2 MB)

I do not need anything at the moment as you are already trying out the development build potential fix

But for a crash - getting the latest log file does not help as that log file covers the period after relaunch of the Plex Media Server app following the crash

The diagnostics needed following a crash is the Download of the server logs through Plex Web - that would give a zip of the log files

and for Mac OS issues a zip of the files within
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

DiagnosticReports.zip (281.2 KB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2023-08-04_09-20-33.zip (3.8 MB)

Crash date was Aug 31

Thanks for the logs / crash reports

They show the following:

Last Plex Media Server crash was on version 1.32.5.7328-2632c9d3a at Jul 31, 2023 00:05

There were no Plex Media Server crashes on 1.32.7.7361

The crash reports were all for the Plex Transcoder crashing in libavformat - which I believe is the subtitles issue that is being looked into

So it is all working correctly and we are still looking into the Transcoder crashes
