Plex Server not picking up new folder as duplicate media after move to Synology

Server Version#: 1.21.4.4079
Player Version#: 4.51.3

I am moving my Windows Plex Server to a Synology 418. The actual media files are located on a Netgear NAS device. I thought I followed the instructions correctly. I started the Synology Plex Server after the migration and added the folder where my media was now located (on the Synology NAS). When I scanned a library, Plex is picking up all the same files as NEW instances of the same media, instead of adding the “2” to existing entries to just indicate there are two copies in the library.

Any clues on what I may have missed in the migration process? And how can I fix it without having to restart the complete copy of my Windows Plex Server folders?

Incidentally, I also restarted the Windows Plex Server and added the folder on the new Synology NAS to a library on the Windows server. The Windows Plex Server is doing the same thing … recognizing all the same media files as new instead of duplicates.

Same thing happened to me the other day - and I’m not running a Synology.
I do absolutely know how that is supposed to work - and did it just like you did (with a Windows Twist, of course).

Must be a new feature.

I was going to copy/move some stuff around for load balancing, but… I didn’t like what that did to my Recently Added Movies list. It basically got destroyed.

Ugh. Not what I wanted to hear.

Hopefully someone will have a solution to get back to the “duplicate” copies instead of NEW instances of each media file. You’re right. Absolutely kills Recently Added. I imagine it also screws up Playlists as well.

If I may add here?

The most important steps to make it see duplicate are:

  1. Automatic scanning OFF
  2. Empty Trash OFF
  3. ADD the new location first
  4. Let it scan and tag duplicate

If this is where it’s failing, then Check the Agent

If PMS matches the same movie with a different agent, (IMDB vs TMDB, or TheTVDB vs … ) then it will not see them as duplicate.

Yeah, I did 1-4 but it’s not picking things up as duplicates.

The Agent settings match between the old Windows PMS installation and the new Synology installation.

Strange that it did the same thing (not recognizing duplicates) when I added the new Synology NAS folder to my existing Windows library.

In Settings - Server - Agents, are the agents, in all categories, enabled and in the same top->bottom order? This is the ‘stacking’ order. It will also have an impact on which agents match.

Next, can you get the XML (Hover over the item → Get Info → View XML – just the top part , stopping before the Genre & Cast) ?

I would like to see the two different matches for one of the items.

I expect to see the matching agents to be different. Seeing the XML will show us what really happened.

For my part - added only as anecdotal evidence as I don’t have a Synology in play - I have never used ANY other Movie Agent than TMDB (the legacy agent - same as always - have not upgraded - will not upgrade until forced to), it’s the Agent I’m using now - and having done this THOUSANDS OF TIMES SUCCESSFULLY IN THE PAST, know all the steps required for success.

It didn’t happen.

I won’t try it again soon - kinda busy with other things ATM and don’t want to wreck my Recently Added again right now, but will watch this space with interest.
