Plex Server not picking up new movies

Server Version#: 1.16.4.1469
Player Version#: N/A

Ever since the latest update to Plex server, my plex will not pickup any new movies that get moved into the folder. I do not see anything in the logs for this and have tried all suggestions on the forums to no avail. I am running on Ubuntu 18.04.

Thanks

Please verify:

  1. DEBUG logging on
  2. VERBOSE logging off.
  3. Restart PMS
  4. Give it a minute to capture all the startup info (I’m looking for a possible table overflow)
  5. Scan files
  6. When complete, Download Logs
  7. Attach the ZIP please

I have tried a database restore to a previous date, but that did not fix the issue. Thanks!

Thanks for the logs.
You don’t have a table overflow (too many directories being monitored) which is the usual cause for the symptom you report. Restarting PMS and letting it startup up quickly reveals Notify - Permission Denied errors if this is true. Your logs don’t show that.

What I see it doing a great deal of is rematching all your existing metadata with the new provider.
Did this start recently or is this an ongoing problem?

One of the problems Plex is having is, while most of your names are good, there are those which are very poorly formed. They also contain non-media files (windows EXE and TXT files).
To resolve this, if you like a well curated media library, I suggest grabbing FileBot and having it help with the naming and media restructuing / cleanup.

As example:

It’s going to take a great deal longer to search for these while giving no value. You’re wasting CPU time doing a search.

In this case, If I were to help with your renaming, I would do the following.

  1. Turn off all automatic updating, Empty trash options under Library
  2. create a new directory as /mnt/plex/plex/NewMovies
  3. Get FileBot ($6 for a yearly licence but well worth it)
  4. Define a “Movie” renaming rule of /mnt/plex/plex/NewMovies/{n} ({y}/{n} (y})
  5. Then, a few at a time, drag existing movies into filebot, let it match them for you.
  6. When you’ve confirmed they are correct, click Rename to rename and move them into the new directory.
  7. When you’re done, All which is left behind in the original directory is probably unwanted. You can inspect to be certain before deleting it.
  8. After deleting, Rename “NewMovies” and put it back where you have “movies” now.
  9. Re-enable scanning and the options.
  10. Force a Scan Files to have it pick up all the changes. I’m sure you see a profound difference in response time since the names are already known good with no superfluous items to slow it down.

If you’d like, I’ll help more with this task as you do the first few.
(I recommend make a couple copies and play with the copies first while learning to drive FileBot)

Unfortunately I’m using Ubuntu server so filebot won’t work. Trust me I’ve looked into a solution for cleaning up the files as they finish downloading. There’s nothing for Linux servers!

But I know enough about Linux I can do this with some scripts. I will just have it clean out all non movie files/srt files. Thanks!!!

FileBot does work on Ubuntu. I use it on Fedora.

It has a debian (ubuntu) installer.

I would suggest you move the good stuff first with filebot. let it do the heavy lifting.
What’s left will be a smaller pile to sort through.

It requires a gui in order to get started

Ok I have removed all duplicate bad folders (The ones with dots in the name). I have also removed all txt and exe files. Re-ran the scan and still the same thing. What file did you look through in the logs? I would like to debug this. I am a web developer, so I am very familiar with the process, just need to know what to look for

Why is this a problem? Is the server headless?

If so, Mount the drive(s) local to your computer and rename/move remotely. Just as good as being there.

You could also use Remmina (remote desktop for Linux) or VNC.

EDIT: Can you rerun a scan and set of logs for me please?

Its sitting in a datacenter, so thats not an option really. And yes it is headless. I find it odd that people prefer windows and GUI with something like this. Seems overkill

Sitting in a datacenter and ‘headless’ is not stopping you from using FileBot.
You can open a remote “desktop” to it just as if you were local and connected to the graphics card directly.

FileBot also has automated and a command line mode. You can run the whole thing that way too plus have it run via cron.

Their help is extensive on how to use it.

Yeah I set it up a while back and had to ask their support about the initialization and they told me I had to use a GUI for that. Sucks, but I might have to look into this.

I will send logs in a bit. Thanks!

Which log file are you looking at and what do i need to look for? Trying to debug this myself for my own edification

THe full ZIP please. I ask for it because I correlate several with each other.

I understand you want the full zip. I am asking WHICH files do you use while doing this?

Server files, scanner files, and all the agent files.

If you’re looking for the stacking:

PMS -> Scanner -> Agents

All the data then bubbles back up and PMS makes the Database entries complete.
