Plex server not running after update (Asustor NAS)

I don’t think that backing up will make a difference at this point because all of your files should still be there. We just need to get a fix to the faulty apk file (I would think).

BUT, backing up is definitely a great idea.

IT’S ALIVE!!

I let my AS-5202T continue on the install and eventually the Plex icon came back to the Asustor desktop. I got here by trying to uninstall it and then tried reinstalling it. Ultimately it just took some time and finally I noticed that the icon was back on the Asustor desktop.

Version installed ended up being: 1.25.2.5319-c43dc0277 on the info screen in Asustor App Central but 1.25.3.5409 on Settings - “My NAS—General”. Interesting. Seems to have “self healed”.

Just to clarify, I uninstalled and installed from the Asustor App Central, not the downloaded apk. It does seem to have kept the upgrade on the NAS but is showing the older version through the App Central page.

Most, if not all, package managers won’t let you downgrade.
They will, let you uninstall and then install a lower version.

The question is whether or not the data remains.

I don’t work on the ASUSTOR machines but it’s nice to know the data is kept.
I will remember that for future reference.

Yes all the data is there. When can we expect a new apk that will fix the error in the current version that has killed everyone’s server?

Thanks for the tip! Yes I did what you suggested and the server is back up only but as you said an older version but that is ok!

At least it is working. Will wait for the future patch before i upgrade! 5409 is terrible!

I’ve left a message for the Engineering team.

I will see what happens tomorrow and try to get them to act .

Sorry for the late response - it was a night here in Europe  I just opened my eyes
I am amazed, how many people had this problem.
I am keeping previous apk (PlexMediaServer-1.25.3.5385-f05b712b6-x86_64.apk), but as some guys here said - the App store does not allow to install previous versions.
I tried to delete the last database com.plexapp.plugins.library.db (as I read somewhere), and tried to use previous one - unsuccessful. Tried to look in the Preferences.xml file (deleted it too), but still no clue what to do.
I think that by the time of update, the apk had replaced some files, but not replaced some others, which the Plex server needs.
Other suspition - my WEB player and browser can’t find actually the server instance. It must be located at https://localhost/web:32400 in my case, but it does not respond.
Last one - I am afraid to press Uninstall for Plex server on my Asustor NAS, because I am afraid, that it will delete all my media folders and I should recreate my whole database from the scratch.
I tried to copy whole directory (Plex Media Server) recursively, but the process is stopping at 22% saying that there is many files that can’t be copied (plex server is shut down at the moment). And of course - there is no info which files are problem ones
Today I will try to access the NAS via SSH to see why the Plex server process is hanging.

I have many server logs, and had reviewed them, but I can’t understand where is the problem.
If you want I can’t publish the last log lines.

I had to restart the NAS, then deactivate Plex, then restart NAS again, then delete the deactivated Plex, another restart of the NAS and finally installed Plex from App Central - luckily all data is still there.

You are saying, that the uninstall process of Plex server does not delete any files from database, media, cache and etc?
If that is the case, it will be great  - are you using Asustor NAS or some other device?

Guys, I have an unexpected success here
I just decided to download whole directory Plex Media Server to my SSD drive, via Download command from File Explorer in Asustor App Drawer. I used right-click on directory, and choose “Download” which creates zip archive in realtime and copies whole directory structure on other disk.
I have waited about 10 minutes for may data to copy (~49 000 files), and after that I realized, that last night I had deleted last copy of database com.plexapp.plugins.library.db, and replaced it with previous one com.plexapp.plugins.library.db-2022-01-13.
So, I have an original copies of these files, and used my Samba share to the NAS drive to copy these two files back where they have been - \Plex\Library\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Databases

After that I noticed, that in Asustor App Drawer, my Plex Icon is active. Tried to turn off Plex (successful) and turn it on back (surprise for my - successful too). Last night I tried this 20 times without success. But this time it runs!

Now my Plex server is up and running and all titles are ok.

I can’t find any reasonable explanation. But I am sharing my situation with you. Keep in touch!

yep, two NAS Asustor’s - 608 and 6104

Thanks Frank. I will have in mind your solution.
Did you read mine? - I still can’t explain what happened, but… I am happy to have working Plex Server now.

me too - I guess the re-install did overwrite the messed-up config files from the newer version.

Great that your solution helped as well - luckily I did not need to try that - backing up the plex folder usually takes hours as there are several million files …

I did not know that uninstalling plex leaves the metadata intact - was willing to risk it anyway as my lib is well maintained and a complete rebuild although taking a lot of time does not need any additional edit.

I was able to uninstall, then install the previous version and it’s working fine.
All my libraries are there and it seems to be working fine.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have it back up and running and appears to be on 5409!
I uninstalled through App Central (just pressed the delete icon), restarted the NAS, and reinstalled via App Central. The whole process took less than 5 minutes!
Much thanks, everyone!
I will now be proceeding with caution whenever installing updates (and keeping old APK files!)

I can also confirm that I just went to my “Installed Apps” and deleted Plex, restarted my NAS, and then reinstalled Plex from the app store. Took just a few minutes but it got my server back to running again and nothing was lost (that I know of).

Yes, that is a good idea - to keep everything from now on… APK’s, Database backups, and whole data structure of the Plex
Have a nice watching, everyone!

I got a new AS6604T to replace old one, After I installed plex this what I’m told

Not authorized

You do not have access to this server

I then download plex server on my PC and guess what?! It worked and i was even able to add media even create a new server. So the problem is with Asustor NAS

The apk that has proven that it’s no good, 1.25.3.5409 Is still being offered. It needs to be trashed.
