Plex server on one machine, TV tuner on another?

I want to sign up for Plex Pass so I can add OTA HDTV/Live TV capabilities to my Plex setup. The problem is my Plex server runs on Ubuntu in a VM (ESXi hypervisor) and my TV tuner PCI-e card (WinTV HVR 2250) crashes the ESXi server when making it available to the VM (pass-thru/VT-d). Is there a way to have the TV tuner PCI-e card in another machine (i.e., my home NVR server) and kind of use it as a networked tuner for the Plex server? Or, any other ideas getting Live TV to work in this scenario (besides migrating my Plex Server and the TV tuner together to their own machine)?

Your tuner is supported but if performing passthrough to Linux causes ESXi to crash, there’s nothing we can do. I can only suggest asking in their forum about using the tuner unde ESXi,

To your question. unless it provides an IP address interface, you cannot put it in another host

Amending my previous: You could put the tuner in another host, run PMS on it solely to do recording, saving its recordings to a LAN central location where your main PMS can see and play from.

That’s actually a great idea, but now that I think about it I better keep everything as consolidated and simple as possible since I’m so over managing multiple systems (heh, and I need make more use of my underutilized 48 core, 192 GB VM server). I didn’t realize there’s other compatible TV tuners can be had for so cheap (i.e., Homerun Duo for $70 USD on eBay), so I’ll just get that.

Thanks

There is a HomeRun Quad.

I thought about the quad for future proofing, but I doubt I’d ever use the Homerun for recording - I just want the ability to watch live TV within Plex so I don’t have to switch to my Kodi/NextPVR system or use the TV remote and switch the input to tuner (so friggin’ lazy/spoiled, SMH).

No no… you have that wrong.

The epitome of lazy is letting it record so you only need one remote to switch to the Live or Recorded files

And with 4 tunes, you can record 3 different things while watching something else.

Unless you really want the 6 tuner??

LOL

It seems likely that a common use case is to put the tuner high in the house somewhere and the VM server is elsewhere, in a bad reception area of the property. I am facing that problem now with a Hauppage WinTV-dualHD USB tuner.

Heh, it’s been 3 months and I haven’t even used Plex Live TV. SMH! I hate having terminal W?BIC-itis
