Network tuner and Plex Media Server on different networks?

Hi, this is potentially a silly question, but one that I can’t seem to find the answer to…

Does the digital tuner (e.g. HD Homerun Connect) and Plex Media Server need to be on the same network for DVR and/or Live TV to work?

Obviously, the Plex Media Sever won’t discover the digital tuner automatically, but the ability to enter an IP address for the network tuner perhaps signals that this might be possible (at least, to my limited understanding).

I’m potentially thinking that I might be able to set up an HD Homerun Connect at my parents-in-law’s home in Peru, and accessing it using my Plex Media Server in the UK (thus allowing my wife to watch her Peruvian TV channels). Maybe live TV might be problematic, but DVR might be more successful, if in principle this would work.

Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Could just setup a Plex Server and HDHR at in laws. Point Plex Server there to a shared Dropbox folder for recordings. Your Plex server could then be configured with a library pointing to the Dropbox folder. Just need to keep Dropbox folder cleaned up occasionally if it starts to run out of room.

You may not even need the Dropbox folder. Probably can play remotely if they have enough upload bandwidth.

The big concern I would have if you tried to talk to it across the internet is there is no security on the hdhr. Once it is on the internet anyone could use it. At least with a PMS on their end it is secured via plex logon and behind their network.

Another option which could be interesting would be some kind of VPN and bridging your networks together. But if you do manage to get live TV working that way they would need enough bandwidth to upload the content. Atsc can be up to 19mbps. That may or may not be practicle

Thanks, that’s certainly one option, just maybe one or two too many things that could potentially go wrong (without someone being nearby to fix them). Maybe worth a try though - thanks for your suggestion!

Also thanks Mavrrick - I think the bandwidth could potentially be the issue here to be honest… Maybe the Dropbox solution is the only feasible one here

Security is also a very good point that I hadn’t considered…
