I downloaded the Plex server package for QNAP NAS Intel/AMD 64-bit (QTS-4.3 and newer) and installed it manually on a QNAP TS-h686 running QuTS h4.5.0.1409 Build 20200829 via it’s App Center applet.
This NAS runs the QuTS Hero edition with ZFS-based OS which is different that the QTS OS.
It seems to be running fine. Does anyone know if this is a supported environment? Should I be concerned about this being a long term solution? Thanks in advance for any information you can share.
I am going through a bit of an issue with QNAP myself.
It seems the TVS-1282, introduced in 2017, is now EOL.
It is unclear if my special order from Taiwan with the KabyLake (i7-7700) CPU, which is also part of the TVS-1282T3’s, is EOL or not.
To that end, I’m spending my time preparing to load a new NAS solution on the box
@killerbluechickn I too have a TS-h686 and am curious how your Plex server has been running. Do you have any updates on how it has been performing? Thank you!
So far I seems to be working for me. However, I have not been using it as my primary PMS just yet. Soon I hope. Also relevant may be that I have PMS installed on a pair of ssd’s configured as RAID1. Maybe that’s mitigating the transaction speed problems mentioned by @ChuckPa?
I’ve been delayed because the TS-h686 unit I got had a CPU fan error out of the box (0 RPMs reported but the fan was blowing). I returned it and the replacement had the same error. I can clear the error by plugging in the CPU fan into the FAN2 port instead of FAN1. So I’ve been chatting with QNAP support to determine if this is just an assembly issue or if the board(s) is(are) bad. So far, no commitment to the assembly problem but the NAS otherwise seems to run fine.
Any chance would you mind sharing what cpu fan port your TS-h686 is plugged into @afgeek ? My motherboard version is v1.2 and was assembled in Sept 2020. Thanks in advance and sorry for the minor non-plex tangent :).
I haven’t had any issues related to the CPU fan. I haven’t cracked open the case to check where my CPU fan and System fan are plugged in. The system has been rock solid out of the box. Because I haven’t opened the case I don’t have my motherboard version and assembly date either.
I will keep an eye on my PMS since I re-initialized my QNAP and went from QTS to QuTS hero. The app installed without a hitch. The issue I am experiencing right now is the stupid myqnapcloud not allowing me to connect. I have a SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt which shows that it is valid, however I am unable to connect to my QNAP via my myqnapcloud address. I have a ticket in with QNAP regarding it.
Thought I’d give an update about my experience. I’ve had this QNAP TS-h868 NAS as my primary PMS for about 3 weeks now running flawlessly.
Also of note, it seems that QNAP now shows Plex as available in their App Center. When I first installed it, it was not available there. Not sure what all that entails, but I thought it might be significant. QNAP App Center
Going to buy one of these myself. Any news on the transcoding with iGPU? I assume since my 3.0ghz Intel i5 Mac mini won’t do it, this won’t touch transcoding 4k to 1080p for remote viewers?
I finally have a TVS-h1688x coming at the end of the week to replace my trusty heavily modified TS-470. Planning on running it with QuTS so if I can be of any help let me know. It’s going to be a fresh installation.
Anything I might say would be premature.
We are working with QNAP to answer some questions at this time.
While the CPU in the TVS-h1288x is impressive , ok it’s a beast, I’m happy with my i7-7700 (not the US stock i7-6700 which can’t do HEVC) but we can compare the two when I have valid data to compare the two against.
