Plex Server on QNAP QuTS Hero edition OS

I can report so far:

  1. TVS-h1288x , with QTS, is a hauling beast.
  2. TVS-h1288x , with QuTS Hero, has issues. We are working with QNAP to resolve.

What issues in particular with QuTS? :slight_smile:

I haven’t noticed anything strange in particular.

One issue which occurs is removing the package and destroying the .qpkg/PlexMediaServer directory.

On a large installation, it’s painful.

ZFS partitions are cheap, quick, and plentiful.
If each QPKG were in its own ZFS_xxxx partition then uninstall would be trivial.
We’ve observed 30+ minute removal times because QPKG removes files individually.

Has the issue with QuTS Hero been resolved with QNAP?

@Madbeefer

From what we are able to test:

  1. Provided you run a full-up pool (all drives in the volume)
  2. Have the ZFS recommended 1 GB RAM per 1 TB storage
  3. It will behave OK.

Not too fond of how QNAP did their datasets / subvolumes. They could have done it in a manner which makes install & remove a snap (quick too) but otherwise it seems to work.

We would need to write code specific to QNAP to deal with their quirky dataset structure (ZFSDATA_xxx). It doesn’t need to be encrypted for each share. The share name could be the dataset name and be like QTS (e,g. /share/Movies) and not ZFSDATA_541.

If you do use it, You’ll find that it takes a lot more scrolling to find your shared folders . This is what we’d have to write specific QNAP QuTS-only code to handle.

We did experiment with running 3 HDDs and it was a total SLUG even with the CPU.
ZFS did a nose-dive into the dirt. ( It had no room to do what it does best).

How are you intending to use it? Full up filled ? Piece meal JBOD ?

I plan on putting eight 16TB drives in the NAS

I was planning on getting the TVS-h1688x, to have the additional bays for future expansion. However it looks like using QuTS Hero might not be feasible to maintain a gig of ram per TB of storage. It might be easier in the long term to use QTS, that and there seems to be less issues overall compared to QuTS Hero.

The TVS-h1288x is spec’d for 128 GB (4 x 32 GB).
8 x 16TB drives = 128TB storage.

You have the 1GB / TB ratio.

It’s a shame you can’t add 4 x 64GB memory.

I have the TVS-h1288x with 128GB of ram and 8X16TB in 1 pool.

I have Plex in a docker container, which was working fine with HW transcoding, but with all the updates and changes, this is not the case anymore. So If I can help, just let me know and I will try my best.

@seriousuxx

I am very interested in learning about the problems you’re having.
The h1288x is a beast and should power through anything thrown at it.

Can you please capture a case (DEBUG logging ON, VERBOSE logging OFF)
which shows where it goes “sideways” ?

Hi @ChuckPa

I am just a simple user, hope this helps > My Files

Otherwise let me know

Does the provided file help?

@seriousuxx

RTF of a small segment does not help, sorry.

May I please have the PMS-generated ZIP file where it contains the problem?

I have the h1688x
 I added a rtx 4000 quadro. Does anyone tested hardware transcoding on QuTS. The card is installed, the nvidia drive package is running and the card is in QTS Mode. But Plex using the cpu.

The QuTS Hero OS has not yet passed testing.

QTS on the TVS-h series units has passed testing and will function provided QNAP’s drivers for it function has they do for other QTS systems. We have not yet had time to complete all facets. We know the CPU transcoding is outstanding.

There is still a great deal of work for us to complete.

QuTS Hero represents such a major change that our packaging will need to support two very different configurations.

I hope to support both configurations in one package but make no promises at this time.

thank you for the answer
 good to know that you guys working on that. If I can help with logs or anything else write me message.

Hope this is what you mean > Plex Media Server Logs_2021-04-02_12-31-55

In attempting to download your logs, that site is pushing junk at me.

Please upload your logs here.

Docker?

I thought you were using native?

I’ve never seen docker on QuTS . NO idea if it works but from your logs – Looks like it doesn;t.

Yes, I have it running in a docker container as mentioned before. HW transcoding did work, but now it isn’t anymore.
I have not changed anything in my config. Plex is works for me, except HW transcoding
