OK, I understand some of the lingo in these posts but I clearly need help. I am trying to install a new Plex network in my RV. This should be so simple - not so much for me. I have an i7 NUC running Windows 10 in a cabinet with external USB hard drives. The NUC is connected to a TP-Link WiFi 6 Router via ethernet. The TP-Link is my internal WiFi. I have a Pepwave MAX Transit Cat 18 connected to the WAN port of the TP-Link. Now the Pepwave can be painfully slow or blazingly fast depending on the cellular connection or the RV park WiFi speed. I have an LG TV connected to the internal WiFi. Something is wrong because I get constant delays when playing movies.
The Plex server should not need to go out to the internet except to login the first time right? This should all run on my intRAnet correct? If I play the movie from the PC using the Plex player, life is good.
Would I be better connecting the PC directly to my TV using HDMI and then use the HTPC app? That would limit my watching TV on a single TV and I would have to figure out some sort of remote control. Any ideas or help would greatly be appreciated!
One thing you want to post is the details of the media file you are having trouble playing. Maybe the issue is transcoding is being triggered because the LG does not natively support playback of the codec/formats being used.
Secondly, the TV is affixed to the wall of your RV and the server is in a cabinet in the same vehicle – I would just run a wired Ethernet connection to the TV so wi-fi and interference from vehicle structure or other things is not a concern.
The internet connection is going to be used mostly for collecting metadata for media when it is first loaded, and logging into the Plex account on devices – except the initial launch on an LG smart TV because it has to download the Plex client (the thing you grabbed in the LG Content Store is not the actual app).
Thanks for the feed back. Never dawned on me it could be the TV!
Connecting the PC directly to the TV with HDMI as you mentioned, and using Plex HTPC, would be the best thing all around. There would be no network to worry about since the client would be playing on the server. Virtually all media and subtitle types would Direct Play, too. You can also set up manual server connections by IP in the HTPC app, which would allow the client to work without internet access (the LG app had this feature too, but I don’t know if it still does).
Plex HTPC can be controlled remote from the Plex mobile apps (it’s the casting option that has the little Plex chevron symbol on it instead of a normal option).

You wont see anything happening on the TV screen, you just browse and start playback on the phone and it makes the HTPC app play the title instead. If you’re solo RV’ing this might be fine, but if you have a spouse/family along you might want to go to the trouble of setting up a normal PC remote control.
