Plex Server Setup with NAS/SHIELD

Hi,

I am setting up my first plex server and have multiple devices that can transcode as part of the setup. I wanted to ask whether I could choose which device does the transcoding or if this is locked in once setup.

My files are going to be stored on a Synology 1819+ Nas. I have a Nividia Sheild Pro on both TVs. I will be hosting the files on the NAS and therefore installing Plex on the NAS and setting up that path in Plex Media Server.

The NAS however, is not as powerful as the Shields for transcoding. As the Shields are powering my TVs and will be the interface I use to launch Plex. Will the Shields take over from the NAS for the transcoding or will they just be a ‘dumb’ device at the end which is showing the content and the NAS will be trying to do all the work?

I use the Nvidia Shield 2019 Pro with the Plex app.

Anything I send it is DirectPlay from PMS; including subtitles.

It’s a super player and the app is first rate.
